Walter’s Last Breakfast Shift

Chapter 17 - Walter’s Last Breakfast Shift

Walter worked until eighty-one.

His final shift was not announced because he refused ceremony. He arrived at five, burned the first batch of bacon, corrected everyone’s coffee technique, and complained that modern eggs lacked character.

At ten, he sat down.

Mack noticed first.

Walter’s hands trembled. His breathing had become shallow. An ambulance took him to the hospital where the false transfer had begun.

This time, Lucas read every form aloud.

Mack waited outside until invited.

Elena brought the original trust.

Mara brought no documents because Walter threatened to haunt her if she turned his deathbed into a meeting.

Walter had heart failure.

There would be no recovery.

Lucas sat beside him.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Walter looked tired.

“You’ve said that.”

“I don’t know if it was enough.”

“It isn’t a bill.”

Walter turned toward Mack.

“You paid for that breakfast yet?”

Mack smiled through tears.

“Still working on it.”

Walter died after sunrise with Lucas holding one hand and Mack the other.

The diner closed for one day.

The next morning, the doors opened because Walter had written clear instructions.

Feed people.

Do not turn grief into decoration.

At booth seven, three mugs waited.

One for Walter.

One for Lucas.

May you like

One for Mack.

Nobody touched the first.
