The Man Lucas Became Next

Chapter 16 - The Man Lucas Became Next
Lucas’s law license was suspended for three years.
He could have appealed.
He did not.
He took courses in elder law, medical consent, and fiduciary ethics while working at the diner and a nonprofit legal clinic as an administrative assistant. He was forbidden from advising clients, a limitation Mara enforced with unreasonable enthusiasm.
“You are not a lawyer today,” she reminded him.
“I know.”
“You made a legal face.”
“I have one face.”
“Unfortunately.”
Humor became possible before trust fully returned.
At the clinic, Lucas met families facing guardianship abuse similar to Walter’s case. Some had no diner full of witnesses, no biker club, no retired judge, and no security recording.
He learned how easily polite documents erased people.
He also learned that his education remained useful even without status. He organized files, found dates, and helped attorneys understand corporate structures.
Years later, after reinstatement review, Lucas was permitted to practice under supervision.
His first case involved an elderly mechanic whose nephew tried to sell a repair shop through false incapacity papers.
Lucas won.
He did not tell reporters.
He brought Walter the court order and placed it near the register.
Walter read it carefully.
“You did good.”
The words affected Lucas more than every promotion Raymond had given him.
He looked around the diner.
“I should have done good here first.”
“Yes.”
Walter offered no easy absolution.

Then he added, “You can still do the next thing right.”
Lucas carried that sentence into every room afterward.
