Evan Returns For His Things

Chapter 16 - Evan Returns For His Things

Evan returned to the house under police supervision.

He was allowed thirty minutes and two moving boxes. Claire chose not to leave. Robert and Mara remained nearby, but she stood in the living room where the confrontation had happened.

Evan entered through the same front door.

The camera light glowed red.

He looked older. Anger had drained into resentment. He gathered clothes, watches, and framed photographs. He ignored the nursery.

Before leaving, he asked to speak with Claire.

The officer allowed conversation from across the room.

Evan looked at her belly.

“Have you chosen a name?”

Claire did not answer.

“I am still the father.”

“Biology does not cancel the order.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re going to let your father raise my child?”

“No. I’m going to raise my child.”

Robert remained silent near the dining room.

Evan tried another approach.

He apologized for frightening her. He blamed pressure, fear of losing the family, and Robert’s disrespect. He said the guardianship plan was only a contingency. He said he never intended to use it unless Claire became unwell.

Claire listened.

Then she asked, “Why was the nursery door remotely lockable?”

Evan stopped.

There was no prepared answer.

His eyes moved toward the stairs.

That silence gave Claire more truth than another confession would have.

“You did not love me badly,” she said. “You built systems around me.”

Evan’s face hardened.

“You think you’re powerful now because your father came through a door.”

Claire looked at the camera above it.

“No. I know I’m free because I can close it after you leave.”

The officer escorted him outside.

Evan carried two boxes. He left the expensive furniture because none of it belonged to him. At the porch, he turned once, perhaps expecting Claire to reconsider.

She did not.

The door closed.

Claire locked it.

Then paused.

She unlocked it again and opened it to the evening air.

For months, locks had meant captivity.

She wanted the door to become a choice.
