The House In Claire’s Name

Chapter 04 - The House In Claire’s Name

Claire sat on the sofa while Robert remained standing.

Her breathing came in short waves. One hand stayed over her belly. The baby moved once beneath her palm, a small private reminder that she needed to remain present.

Evan tried to recover.

He lowered his fist and softened his expression with terrifying speed.

“Claire, tell him this was an argument.”

She looked at him.

“It was an argument until you raised your hand.”

“I never touched you.”

Robert’s jaw tightened, but he did not interrupt.

Evan turned toward him. “You entered without permission.”

Robert took a folded copy of the deed from inside his jacket. No text was visible from a distance, but Evan recognized the cream paper and official seal.

“The trust owns the property,” Robert said. “Claire is the beneficiary and recorded resident. Your occupancy depends on her consent.”

Evan laughed too loudly.

“You cannot throw a husband out of his own home.”

“No,” Robert said. “But Claire can withdraw permission for a threatening occupant to remain while authorities investigate.”

The word authorities changed the room.

Claire looked toward the locked front door.

Robert noticed.

“Did he take your keys?”

She nodded.

“Your phone?”

“On the kitchen counter.”

Evan stepped toward it.

Robert shifted one pace, blocking the path.

“You will not touch evidence.”

Evan’s face hardened again.

Robert spoke without raising his voice. “The deed is not the only document Claire found.”

Claire looked at her father. “You know about the guardianship papers?”

“I know now.”

She began crying—not loudly, but with the exhausted grief of someone realizing fear had been correct.

Evan pointed toward her.

“This is exactly what I mean. She’s unstable.”

The sentence destroyed his remaining disguise.

Robert looked at the woman behind him, then at Evan.

“A frightened person is not unstable.”

“She needs treatment.”

“She needs distance from you.”

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Evan’s eyes widened.

Robert had called before entering.

Not because he wanted spectacle.

Because he understood that men who raise their hands often become most dangerous when control begins leaving the room.

Claire reached for her father’s sleeve.

“Don’t leave me alone with him.”

Robert covered her hand.

“I won’t.”

The front door remained open behind them.

For the first time in months, Claire could see a way out.
