The Camera Above The Door

Chapter 06 - The Camera Above The Door

The doorway camera had been installed by Claire’s mother.

Not the current device, but the first version: a clumsy black box mounted above the porch after someone stole packages during Claire’s childhood. Robert upgraded it over the years, eventually linking the house system to an independent secure archive.

Evan knew cameras covered the exterior.

He did not know the foyer microphone remained active when the door opened.

The recording captured eleven minutes.

Evan demanding to know who Claire called.

Claire saying the house belonged to the trust.

Evan accusing her of betrayal.

The sound of the lock turning.

His threat to have her declared unfit.

The moment his fist rose.

Robert entering.

Claire begging him not to leave her alone.

There was no physical strike.

There did not need to be.

The threat, confinement, and attempt to seize her phone were clear.

Mara Ellis, Robert’s attorney, arrived before midnight. She wore a dark coat and carried no sympathy in her posture, only precision. She preserved the recording, collected Claire’s photographs, and contacted the lawyer whose name appeared on the draft guardianship petition.

That lawyer immediately denied preparing it.

The signature block had been copied from another case.

Forgery.

Mara found additional metadata showing the document originated on a laptop registered to Evan’s consultancy.

Claire sat at the dining table, watching strangers turn her marriage into files.

“It feels wrong,” she whispered.

Mara looked up. “What does?”

“That something so personal is evidence.”

Robert placed tea beside her.

“Privacy protects love,” he said. “Secrecy protects harm.”

Claire stared at the mug.

For months, Evan had told her that speaking about their marriage was betrayal. He used intimacy as a locked room where only his version could survive.

The camera had no loyalty.

It recorded direction, distance, tone, and the raised fist reflected in the hallway mirror.

Mara paused the frame.

Evan stood with his hand above Claire.

Robert appeared in the open doorway behind him.

One second divided threat from interruption.

Claire covered her mouth.

“If Dad had arrived later…”

Robert knelt beside her chair.

“I didn’t.”

The answer did not erase the fear.

But it gave the memory an ending she could survive.
