Chapter 3 - M-17

I did not ask whether Antonio Moretti was my father.

Not immediately.

I could not.

Some questions change your body before they change your life.

I needed air.

I walked into the backyard.

Cold.

Dark.

Luca followed only as far as the porch.

Good.

“Grace.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“I don’t know what I’m going to say.”

“Then don’t say anything.”

Also good.

Marco came out five minutes later carrying an old file.

He had accessed archived family records.

Antonio Moretti.

Two children noted privately.

Male infant, 1995.

Female infant, 1998.

Mother listed only as M.R.

Maria Russo.

My knees almost gave out.

I sat on the porch step.

Luca stared at the file.

“My uncle was Grace’s father.”

Marco nodded.

“Looks that way.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my rent was overdue last month while apparently I belonged to a family that owned half the city.

“I’m still not calling you cousin.”

Luca almost smiled.

“Good.”

Then his face hardened.

“Vale knows this.”

“Yes.”

“He has Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“And he wants the key.”

M-17.

We could not give it blindly.

Federal agents were called.

No secret rescue.

No family-only operation.

I insisted.

Luca agreed.

Maybe because the last two hours taught him something.

The old Moretti hospital basement still existed beneath a redevelopment site on the West Side.

The building above had become luxury apartments.

The sealed lower levels remained part of a legal dispute.

Convenient.

With a warrant and M-17, we entered.

Vault corridor.

Dust.

Rust.

Rows of safe compartments.

M-17 fit one.

Inside:

No money.

Documents.

One cassette.

One blood-test envelope.

One legal trust certificate.

Beneficiaries:

DANIEL CARTER.

GRACE CARTER.

My name.

I stared.

Fifty-one percent of an old Moretti property holding company.

Dormant on paper.

Not dormant in reality.

It owned land under three downtown towers.

Value:

Hundreds of millions.

I laughed again.

Luca did not.

“This is why Vale wants the key.”

“No,” Marco said.

He pointed to the trust terms.

The assets could not transfer through key possession.

They required beneficiary signatures.

Then why kidnap Daniel?

Because he needed both of us.

Vale knew eventually I would open the vault.

The key was only the path.

The real leverage was family.

Then we opened the blood-test envelope.

Two paternity results.

Daniel Carter — biological father Antonio Moretti.

Grace Carter — biological father Michael Moretti.

The room vanished.

No.

Not Antonio.

Michael.

Luca’s father.

I stared at him.

He stared at me.

Half-siblings.

Not cousins.

My mother had two children with two Moretti brothers.

Daniel with Antonio.

Me with Michael.

Luca looked physically ill.

“My father…”

I could barely hear myself.

“Was mine too.”

Marco looked away.

Good.

Privacy in shock.

The cassette was labeled ELENA.

We played it.

Elena Moretti’s voice.

“Maria, if Michael refuses to tell the children, I will.”

Then my mother.

“You’ll destroy them.”

Elena:

“No. The lie will.”

I closed my eyes.

They argued.

Michael had an affair with Maria years after Antonio died.

Not romantic, Mom said.

Grief.

Loneliness.

One night.

Me.

Michael wanted to acknowledge me.

Maria refused.

She did not want another child swallowed by Moretti inheritance.

Elena eventually learned.

Was angry.

Then protective.

She created the trust so Daniel and I would have financial independence if the truth ever emerged.

Not Moretti roles.

Exit money.

Choice money.

That mattered.

Then Elena said:

“If Michael dies before he tells Luca, someone must.”

My mother answered:

“I will.”

She never did.

Cancer came first.

Or fear.

Maybe both.

The tape ended.

Luca sat on the dusty floor beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally:

“So.”

I laughed weakly.

“So.”

“You’re my sister.”

“Half.”

“Still.”

“I work for you.”

“That is suddenly weird.”

“Suddenly?”

He laughed.

Good.

Then my phone rang.

Vale.

I answered.

“Did you find it?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Daniel first.”

“You know what I want.”

“Signatures.”

He paused.

Smart.

Then:

“Midnight. Harbor Freight Terminal. Bring Luca too.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael left a third beneficiary.”

Luca’s face changed.

I put him on speaker.

“What third beneficiary?”

Vale laughed.

“You really don’t know your father.”

Then:

“Bring the trust papers.”

He hung up.

Marco searched the certificate.

No third beneficiary named.

Only a clause:

CONTINGENT SHARE — CODE E17.

Elena Seventeen?

Patient Seventeen?

Then I remembered the photograph.

ELENA WAS NOT FIRST.

Patient 17 had been Mom.

So E17 could mean something else.

Marco accessed old trust drafts.

One note.

E17 = ELENA’S CHILD.

Luca went still.

“I’m Elena’s child.”

Marco shook his head.

“Not the one listed.”

Silence.

Luca stared.

“My mother had another child?”

A third Moretti heir.

Unknown.

Vale had Daniel.

He wanted me.

He wanted Luca.

And somewhere there was one more person whose existence could change control of hundreds of millions.

May you like

The trust was not a fortune.

It was a map of Michael and Elena’s hidden family.
