Chapter 8 - ANNA'S CHOICE

Anna refused the Moretti name.

Not dramatically.

She simply kept Mercer.

“It’s mine.”

Luca nodded.

Good.

She also refused a board seat at Moretti Holdings.

“I operate on children.”

Luca said:

“You’d be better than half the board.”

“Low bar.”

I loved her.

She did accept one responsibility.

The family medical archive.

Not control.

Oversight.

She created independent access rules.

No hidden fertility samples.

No genetic testing without consent.

No private family exceptions.

The old Moretti hospital vault became evidence storage and then, after cases concluded, a small museum about medical consent and institutional abuse.

Anna hated the word museum.

“Education center.”

Fine.

The opening included no Moretti portraits.

Only records.

Anonymous patient stories where privacy required.

Staff names credited.

Maria Carter included.

My mother.

I stood in front of her photograph for a long time.

Young.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

Patient Seventeen.

Then later a nurse.

Then my mother.

A whole person, not a plot device in someone else’s family drama.

That mattered.

Daniel joined me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

I glared.

“Everyone says that now.”

“Family tradition.”

He looked at Mom’s photo.

“She lied to us.”

“Yes.”

“She also saved us from this family.”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Unfortunately.”

We laughed.

Luca stood a few feet away.

Not intruding.

He had become good at that.

Later, he formally resigned as my employer.

The estate household operations moved under an independent management company.

I left housekeeping entirely and became deputy director of the worker-protection fund.

Then director.

Different board.

Different paycheck.

No Moretti authority.

A year passed.

Almost exactly.

On the anniversary of the silver chest dinner, Luca called.

“Dinner?”

I checked the date.

“You scheduled this.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

“Is that a yes?”

I looked at my office.

My name on the door.

GRACE CARTER — EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.

No family title.

No maid uniform.

No debt hanging over my answer.

“Yes.”

Our first date was boring.

Perfectly boring.

Small restaurant.

No private room.

No Marco at the next table.

Across the street.

I noticed.

Luca pretended not to.

We talked about Anna’s terrible coffee.

Daniel’s twins.

Vanessa’s legal-aid project.

Rachel and Leo, who remained happily outside the Moretti family machine.

Eventually Michael.

Luca said:

“I miss him.”

“You can.”

“I hate what he did.”

“You can.”

“I’m tired of both being true.”

“Still true.”

He sighed.

“Annoying.”

“Yes.”

Then he asked:

“Do you think he loved you?”

My father.

Michael.

A man I had never known was my father.

I thought.

“He created a trust.”

“That isn’t love.”

“Exactly.”

Luca looked at me.

I continued.

“I think he cared. I don’t know if he loved me in a way I ever got to receive.”

That was the honest answer.

Michael’s guilt could not retroactively become fatherhood.

He did not raise me.

Thomas Carter did.

The man who fixed my bike, attended school plays, and worked overtime when Mom was sick.

Biology mattered.

So did life.

Luca nodded.

“My father was yours biologically.”

“Yes.”

“But Thomas was your dad.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

That distinction mattered to him too.

We had dessert.

No revelations.

Record.

At the end, he asked:

“Can I kiss you?”

I stared.

“You’re very formal now.”

“Trauma.”

I laughed.

Then:

“Yes.”

Gentle.

No audience.

No power debt.

Good.

The next morning, Mrs. Carter knew somehow.

Of course.

She said nothing.

Just smiled while polishing the recovered silver.

I hated her a little.

Then Anna called.

“There’s one more file.”

I closed my eyes.

“No.”

“Not a secret child.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“Elena’s will.”

I groaned.

Anna laughed.

It turned out not to be a trap.

Elena left instructions that if the hidden children were ever found, no Moretti could compel them to use the name.

That was it.

No money condition.

No control.

Just freedom.

Maybe she had learned before the men did.

I kept Carter.

Daniel kept Carter.

Anna kept Mercer.

Luca kept Moretti.

May you like

Not because names were innocent.

Because none of us wanted to let the worst person carrying a name own it forever.
