Chapter 5 - NORA'S FATHER

Nora went to Vermont with Detective Shaw.

Luca did not argue.

He provided a car only after Nora agreed, and the driver was not Ray because Ray was still under medical restrictions.

Elena Hart lived in a small town near the Canadian border and worked at a community health center.

Nora recognized her before the woman opened the door.

Same eyes.

Older face.

Hands trembling exactly like Nora's.

“Nora.”

That was all Elena managed.

Nora did not hug her.

Not yet.

They sat at a kitchen table.

There was orange juice in the refrigerator.

The sight almost broke Nora.

“My father told me you left.”

“I did.”

“You left me.”

Elena cried quietly.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Nora had expected explanations first.

The admission hurt worse and somehow made listening possible.

Elena had infiltrated the Bellini warehouse after learning migrant workers were being exploited. Michael helped her copy records and move people to Saint Brigid's.

Antonio Moretti discovered the scheme.

But according to Elena, Antonio did something she had never expected.

He offered a deal.

He would shut the trafficking route and provide information against the Bellini subcontractor if Michael and Elena surrendered their copies implicating Moretti companies in other crimes.

Michael refused.

Elena wanted to accept because Nora was eight.

Their marriage fractured under the pressure.

Elena disappeared publicly to protect Nora while continuing the investigation under another name.

“Why didn't you take me?”

“Because they were watching me.”

“Why didn't you come back after Dad died?”

Elena looked destroyed.

“Because I believed his death was a warning.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“From who?”

“Carlo Bellini.”

Nora's chest tightened.

Elena had received a photograph the morning after Michael's crash.

Eight-year-old Nora walking into school.

On the back:

ONE PARENT IS ENOUGH.

Nora stood and walked away from the table.

For nineteen years she had believed she was unwanted.

Now she learned she had been loved badly.

Secretly.

Fearfully.

That did not erase abandonment.

It complicated it.

“Did Luca know?”

“No.”

“Antonio?”

“Maybe. I never knew.”

Elena had continued helping trafficking survivors but stayed away from Boston.

She had followed Nora from a distance through public records and occasional photographs from a family friend.

Nora hated that.

“You watched me grow up without you.”

“Yes.”

“You could have found another way.”

“Maybe.”

“Not maybe.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“You're right.”

Nora did not forgive her that day.

She did take copies of Elena's evidence.

One item changed the investigation.

A cassette recording Michael made the night before his death.

His voice filled Elena's small kitchen.

“If anything happens to me, Carlo knows about the route. Antonio knows enough to stop it. Luca may not know anything yet. Don't assume the son is the father.”

Nora looked at Shaw.

The recording continued.

Michael described meeting Antonio.

Antonio had agreed to cancel the transport.

But someone else had learned Michael planned to deliver evidence to federal investigators.

Michael named Carlo Bellini.

Then:

“Carlo has help inside Moretti security.”

Back in Boston, Luca listened to the recording once.

Then again.

Marco stood beside him.

Nora watched both men.

“Who was inside security eleven years ago?”

Marco answered.

“My predecessor. Dominic Vieri.”

Luca's face changed.

Dominic had been Antonio's security chief.

He had retired to Florida.

Marco called investigators.

They were too late.

Nora did not leave Elena's kitchen with forgiveness. She left with copies, a phone number, and permission to be angry. On the drive south, Shaw told her there was no correct timetable for rebuilding a relationship. Nora said she wasn't sure she wanted one. Shaw answered that deciding later was still a decision. For once, uncertainty did not feel like weakness. It felt like space nobody else was allowed to fill for her.

Dominic Vieri had boarded a private flight that morning.

Destination unknown.

The investigation around this chapter also produced hours nobody would ever dramatize: duplicate invoices, recorded interviews, medical appointments, attorneys arguing over access, and long waits for records that might prove nothing. Nora learned to value those quiet hours. They kept certainty honest. Luca learned that money could purchase speed but not permission, trust, or a different past. Ray measured progress more simply: whether people ate when they were supposed to, whether drivers could report a health problem without fearing replacement, and whether the person with the least status in a room could speak without being punished. Those ordinary standards became harder to dismiss once everyone understood what had happened when they were ignored. 5.1

But his old personnel file contained an emergency contact.

Daniel Cross.

The fake driver.

Dominic was Cross's uncle.
