Chapter 7 - THE DOCKS

The docks smelled like diesel, salt, and rain.

Nora had no reason to be there.

She went anyway.

Not into the operation.

Into the command office with Detective Shaw, where she could watch without becoming another person security had to protect.

That distinction had taken an argument.

Luca wanted her home.

Nora asked whether that was an order.

He stopped.

“No.”

“Then ask.”

“Will you stay somewhere secure tonight?”

“I'll stay with Shaw.”

He nodded.

Progress.

Investigators set a controlled transfer of the archive boxes through tunnel four, hoping whoever wanted the records would move.

Carlo did not appear.

Dominic did.

At 1:17 a.m., an old maintenance van entered through a service gate using credentials deactivated nine years earlier.

The access code still worked because a legacy system had never been removed.

Marco swore at the screen.

Dominic Vieri stepped from the van.

Sixty-three.

Gray-haired.

Former Moretti security chief.

He carried a can of accelerant.

Police arrested him before he reached the archive truck.

No gunfight.

No heroic charge.

Just a tired old man discovering that old access did not equal permanent control.

Dominic asked for a lawyer.

Then saw Nora through the command-room glass.

His face changed.

“You look like him.”

Nora went cold.

Shaw blocked the door.

“You do not have to speak to him.”

“I know.”

That mattered.

Nora chose to enter only after Dominic was seated, cuffed, and counsel had been requested.

She did not question him about the case.

She asked one thing.

“Did you kill my father?”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“Your father killed himself by refusing to understand the world.”

Shaw ended the contact immediately.

But Dominic's sentence was not a confession.

Investigators still needed proof.

The van provided it.

Inside were old files Dominic had stolen when he retired.

One was a handwritten operations log.

Eleven years earlier:

23:05 — HAYES MOBILE.

23:12 — FOLLOW UNIT DEPLOYED.

23:18 — CONTACT AUTHORIZED BY C.B.

23:24 — VEHICLE OFF ROAD.

23:31 — VIERI ADVISED.

23:40 — ROSSI NOT LOCATED.

Michael's crash time matched.

C.B.

Carlo Bellini.

Dominic's attorney tried to argue the initials meant someone else.

Bank records solved that.

Carlo paid Dominic a “retirement bonus” through a shell company one week after Michael died.

Daniel Cross's recent payment came from the same shell.

The past and present connected cleanly.

Carlo had ordered Michael followed and forced off the road.

Eleven years later he tried to use his sister's engagement to place Dominic's nephew behind Luca's wheel and destroy the surviving records.

Nora sat alone after the arrest warrant was issued.

She expected triumph.

She felt tired.

Luca entered the command office.

“They have Carlo.”

“Where?”

“Logan. He was trying to leave.”

She nodded.

No satisfaction.

Luca sat across from her.

“My family made the world where he could do this.”

Nora looked at him.

“Yes.”

He did not flinch.

“I can't undo that.”

“No.”

“I can dismantle what remains.”

“That isn't the same as making it disappear.”

“I know.”

For several seconds, they listened to rain hit the office windows.

Then Luca said, “Ray wants to know if he can come back Monday.”

Nora almost laughed.

“His doctor?”

“Tuesday.”

“Then Tuesday.”

A smile touched Luca's face.

“You sound like you run the place.”

“No. I sound like someone who doesn't want your driver unconscious at dinner.”

The smile disappeared into something warmer.

Nora noticed.

She also noticed she was not afraid of it.

That frightened her differently.

During the dock operation, Nora kept noticing the ordinary machinery around the extraordinary crime: radios charging, coffee cooling, officers comparing timestamps, a printer jamming at the worst possible moment. Her father's death had dominated her imagination for years as one catastrophic instant. The investigation revealed something less cinematic and more frightening. Harm depended on routines. Access codes. Payroll accounts. People following instructions. That meant prevention had to live in routines too.

Outside, police cars carried Dominic away.

Another team processed Carlo.

The investigation around this chapter also produced hours nobody would ever dramatize: duplicate invoices, recorded interviews, medical appointments, attorneys arguing over access, and long waits for records that might prove nothing. Nora learned to value those quiet hours. They kept certainty honest. Luca learned that money could purchase speed but not permission, trust, or a different past. Ray measured progress more simply: whether people ate when they were supposed to, whether drivers could report a health problem without fearing replacement, and whether the person with the least status in a room could speak without being punished. Those ordinary standards became harder to dismiss once everyone understood what had happened when they were ignored. 7.1

The case was not over.

Trials rarely moved as quickly as revelations.

But for the first time, Nora knew who had ordered the car behind her father.

And Luca knew exactly what his inheritance had cost people who never carried his name.
