The Maid Who Entered Through the Service Door

Chapter 04 - The Maid Who Entered Through the Service Door
Richard asked Grace why she had not approached him openly.
She answered in the hotel library with attorneys present.
“I tried.”
After her father died, Grace found Clara’s letters, the bracelet, and the brass key. One letter named Richard and warned that the Ashcroft family might deny she existed.
Grace sent copies to his corporate office.
Victoria’s assistant replied that inheritance fraud would be prosecuted.
Grace requested a meeting with Eleanor.
Hotel security banned her from the property.
She changed tactics.
A housekeeping agency hired her under the name Grace Bennett. The Grand Aurelia needed staff after a labor dispute, and background checks confirmed everything she claimed. She had not lied about her identity.
She simply did not volunteer the name Ashcroft.
“Why work as a maid?” Richard asked.
“Because your office refused a woman claiming to be family. The service entrance accepted a woman willing to clean.”
The answer embarrassed him because it was accurate.
Grace described what she had found.
Invoices from shell companies.
Medical reports written before examinations.
Hidden recordings of Eleanor refusing the sale.
A transfer agreement giving Crown Meridian control of the hotel’s historic properties while leaving employee pensions inside a debt-heavy company.
Richard had negotiated the sale believing it preserved the hotels.
Grace believed it dismantled them.
Victoria leaned toward her attorney.
“This is industrial espionage.”
“No,” Grace said. “It is family evidence found inside property my mother helped design.”
Richard’s attention sharpened.
“Clara was an interior consultant.”
Grace opened her father’s letter.
“She was the lead architect.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
For twenty-two years, the hotel’s official history credited Richard and their father, Edward Ashcroft, with the renovation that created the Grand Aurelia brand.
Clara’s name appeared only in small photographs.

The lie was older than Grace’s employment.
It was built into the walls.
