CHAPTER 6 – THE HOSPITAL HALLWAY

At the hospital, Daniel was not allowed to control the story.

That was new for him.

Doctors and nurses moved with purpose. Emily was evaluated with care. The baby was monitored. No one gave Daniel dramatic speeches, and no one let him rush answers out of fear. He sat in the hallway in his black suit with bloodless hands clasped between his knees, though there was no visible blood on him, only panic.

Emily’s attorney arrived.

Then her sister Rachel.

Then Officer Whitaker.

Daniel stood when Rachel reached him.

She slapped neither his face nor his conscience, though both deserved it.

Instead, she said, “If anything happens to my sister or that baby, you don’t get to act surprised.”

He swallowed. “I know.”

“No. You don’t. That’s the problem.”

She walked past him.

Hours moved slowly.

The doctors finally confirmed Emily was conscious, injured but stable, and the baby’s heartbeat was present and being monitored closely. Daniel wept in a way he had no right to expect anyone to comfort.

When he was allowed to see Emily briefly, Rachel remained in the room.

Emily lay against white pillows, pale and exhausted, one hand still resting near her belly. She turned her head when he entered.

Daniel stopped at the foot of the bed.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Her eyes remained steady.

“For what?” she asked.

The question was not mercy.

It was a trap built from truth.

Daniel took a breath. “For the affair. For bringing Vivian into our life. For not believing you when you said she scared you. For making you stand on those steps alone.”

Emily blinked slowly.

“Good,” she whispered. “At least you know the list is long.”

He closed his eyes.

Rachel looked away, but only because even anger sometimes needs privacy.

Emily’s voice was weak but clear. “You don’t get to protect me now just because she hurt me in public.”

“I know.”

“You protect our child by telling the truth. Every piece of it.”

Daniel nodded.

Outside the room, Officer Whitaker waited with a notebook.

For the first time in months, Daniel did not choose the version that made him look less guilty.

He chose the truth.
