CHAPTER 7 – VIVIAN’S STATEMENT

Vivian’s statement changed three times before midnight.
First, Emily slipped.
Then, Emily stepped backward during an argument.
Then, Vivian touched her lightly and Emily lost balance.
Then, finally, after learning about the witnesses and the paralegal’s recording, Vivian said she had been “emotionally overwhelmed.”
The phrase did not help.
Officer Whitaker listened without changing expression. Good officers knew that panic often revealed more than confession. Vivian cried in controlled bursts, careful not to ruin her makeup too completely. She spoke of love, betrayal, humiliation, and Daniel’s promises.
The officer asked one simple question.
“Did you place both hands on Emily Carter before she fell?”
Vivian looked down.
Silence.
The answer had already been seen by too many people.
Meanwhile, the courthouse footage was collected. A security camera captured the upper steps at an angle. Not perfect, but clear enough to show Vivian closing distance and Emily falling backward immediately after contact. The bystander video supported it. Witness statements aligned.
Vivian’s polished life began collapsing under the weight of public truth.
Her employer placed her on leave.
Her attorney advised silence.
Her family stopped answering press calls.
Her name, once protected by wealth and charm, became attached to a sentence no publicist could soften:
Mistress accused of pushing pregnant wife outside courthouse.
But Vivian’s greatest punishment, at least at first, was Daniel.
He did not call.
Did not ask after her.
Did not send a lawyer to help.
Did not protect the affair that had nearly destroyed his wife and child.
When Vivian finally saw him again at a preliminary hearing weeks later, he stood beside Emily’s family, not hers.
She stared at him like he had betrayed her.
May you like
Daniel looked back at her with cold disgust.
For once, Vivian understood what it felt like to be exposed in front of everyone.
