CHAPTER 9 – THE COURTHOUSE AGAIN

Two months later, Emily returned to the courthouse.

Not for the divorce hearing. That had been moved for safety and conducted with strict arrangements. This visit was for Vivian’s preliminary appearance and the formal submission of several witness statements.

Emily wore a soft black dress and walked slowly, one hand on Rachel’s arm. Her pregnancy had advanced; her body was tired but steady. Daniel arrived separately and kept respectful distance until she nodded once.

The steps looked the same.

That felt offensive at first.

The columns still rose white and grand. The doors still opened and closed. Attorneys still rushed in with briefcases. People still argued into phones. The stone had been cleaned. No mark remained where Emily landed.

But Emily remembered.

At the bottom landing, she stopped.

Rachel whispered, “You okay?”

Emily looked up the steps.

For a moment, she saw herself falling again.

Then she saw something else:

Witnesses pointing.

Officer Whitaker moving with calm authority.

Daniel looking upward in horror.

Vivian frozen in exposure.

Emily breathed.

“Yes,” she said. “I’m okay.”

Inside the courthouse, Vivian appeared smaller than Emily expected. Light gray had been replaced by dark navy. No heels today. No arrogance. Fear had stripped away the polish but not the damage she caused.

When the judge spoke of conditions, restrictions, and the seriousness of the allegations, Vivian kept her eyes down.

Emily did not feel triumph.

She felt awake.

That was enough.

Afterward, Daniel approached carefully. “Can I walk you to the car?”

Emily considered saying no.

Then she said, “You can walk behind us.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Daniel nodded. “Okay.”

It was not forgiveness.

It was geometry.

Emily in front.

Her sister beside her.

May you like

Daniel behind.

For now, that was where he belonged.
