THE SHATTERED CHAMPAGNE FLUTE

The penthouse living room was bright enough to make cruelty look impossible.
Daylight spilled through tall ocean-view windows and stretched across glossy white marble, a cream sofa, a round glass side table, and a crystal chandelier that glowed softly even before evening. The open double doors at the far end led to the private hallway, but for several terrifying seconds, no one came through them.
On the floor beside the round glass table lay Sophia Reynolds.
She was thirty-two, visibly pregnant, wearing an elegant white dress that had been chosen for a charity brunch she never reached. Her light brown hair had come loose around her face. Her breath came in small, shaken pulls. One hand protected her belly, the other pressed against the marble as she tried to steady herself.
Broken glass glittered beside her.
A champagne flute had fallen from the side table when she hit the floor. It had struck the marble, shattered, and scattered in a bright dangerous arc near her dress. Champagne spread thinly through the cracks between the shards.
Standing above her was Vanessa Crane.
Late thirties, long dark hair, tight dark-red dress, face twisted with rage. Her hands trembled, but not from fear yet. Vanessa looked down at Sophia with the fury of a woman who believed someone else’s happiness had been stolen from her.
“You ruined everything!” Vanessa screamed.
Sophia tried to push herself back, but the round glass table blocked one side and the broken champagne glass blocked the other.
“Vanessa,” she gasped, “please—”
Vanessa stepped forward. Her heel struck the marble with a hard click. For one awful second, her eyes dropped to Sophia’s stomach. Then she delivered one sharp, non-graphic kick toward Sophia’s abdomen area.
Sophia cried out once and curled around her belly, both arms protective, breath breaking. There was no blood. No graphic injury. No visible harm to the baby. But the emotional horror of the act filled the entire room.
Vanessa planted her foot back on the marble and froze.
The sound of the double doors opening came like thunder.
Ethan Reynolds rushed in wearing a black tuxedo, white shirt, and black bow tie. Behind him came Claire Monroe in a black dress, one hand already rising to her mouth as she took in the scene.
Ethan stopped hard.
His wife was on the floor.
Broken glass beside her.
Vanessa standing over her.
Sophia’s hands locked around her belly.
For one suspended second, the penthouse held its breath.
Then Ethan stepped forward, his face controlled but furious.
“Get away from my wife.”
Vanessa’s rage collapsed into panic.

Sophia looked up at him through tears, not asking whether he had seen enough.
His face told her he had seen everything.
