CHAPTER 4 – VANESSA’S VERSION OF LOVE

Vanessa Crane did not think of herself as cruel.

That was what made her dangerous.

Cruel people who know they are cruel can sometimes be predicted. Vanessa believed she was wounded, overlooked, and owed. Every ugly thing she did arrived inside a story where she was the one who had suffered first.

She had met Ethan at twenty-two, when both of them were ambitious and too proud to admit loneliness. They worked late nights together. Shared business failures. Celebrated their first major client with cheap champagne because they were not yet rich enough for the good kind. Ethan trusted her mind, and Vanessa mistook professional intimacy for destiny.

Then Ethan grew.

He matured.

He stopped drinking too much.

He started therapy after his father died.

He became gentler.

That gentleness did not turn toward Vanessa.

It turned toward Sophia.

Vanessa told herself Sophia had trapped him. That the pregnancy was strategy. That Ethan had become sentimental. That no man chooses a quiet woman in white unless she has learned how to manipulate silence.

By the time she entered the penthouse in the dark-red dress, Vanessa had rewritten the entire marriage in her head.

Sophia was not a wife.

She was a thief.

The round glass table held the champagne flute Vanessa had brought. It was supposed to be a toast. A final performance of civility before the gala, before Ethan publicly announced a new family foundation in Sophia’s name for maternal health initiatives.

That announcement had broken Vanessa.

She confronted Sophia near the cream sofa first.

“You don’t even know what he built before you,” Vanessa said.

Sophia kept one hand near her belly. “I know enough to respect it.”

“You know nothing.”

“I know he chose this life.”

“With you?”

“With our child.”

That sentence ended the performance.

Vanessa shoved her.

Not a theatrical push. A real one. Hands striking Sophia’s upper body with enough force to make her lose balance beside the round glass table. Sophia tried to catch herself, but her hip struck the edge of the sofa and her weight went sideways. The champagne flute tipped. She landed on the marble with a hard, breathless cry as the glass shattered beside her.

For a second, Vanessa looked startled by what she had done.

Then Sophia reached instinctively for her belly, and Vanessa’s face changed.

The child.

May you like

The visible proof that Ethan’s future no longer had room for her fantasy.

That was when obsession crossed into something unforgivable.
