CHAPTER 7 – THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Claire Monroe had seen wealthy disasters before.

As Ethan’s legal adviser and Sophia’s friend, she had occupied the strange middle ground between family and counsel for years. She knew the difference between scandal and danger. Scandal wants privacy. Danger needs witnesses.

The moment she saw Sophia on the floor, she became a witness.

And then she became a wall.

Vanessa tried to call Ethan from the police station that night. Claire blocked it through counsel. Vanessa tried to contact Sophia with an apology. Claire redirected it. Vanessa’s family sent messages implying emotional distress, long friendship, misunderstanding. Claire documented all of them.

By morning, a protective order was requested.

By noon, Vanessa’s access to Reynolds properties and events was revoked.

By evening, half the family network understood that the woman in the red dress was no longer welcome anywhere near Sophia.

That was not enough for Claire.

She reviewed the footage herself with Ethan after Sophia was resting.

Ethan watched once and then turned away, pale.

Claire did not comfort him immediately.

“You need to see the first thirty seconds again,” she said.

“I saw enough.”

“No. You saw the impact. You need to see Sophia’s face before it.”

He looked at her, angry.

Claire did not blink.

So he watched again.

There it was: Sophia backing away before the shove. Her hand on her belly. Vanessa stepping into her space. The fear that existed before the fall.

Claire paused the video.

“That face,” she said, “is what she has been describing to you for weeks.”

Ethan went still.

The words hit exactly where Claire intended.

He remembered Sophia saying Vanessa made her uncomfortable. He remembered brushing it off gently, lovingly, disastrously. He remembered promising nothing would happen.

Something had.

“I thought I was keeping peace,” he said.

Claire’s voice softened, but only slightly. “You were keeping the wrong person comfortable.”

That sentence became the hinge of Ethan’s change.

Later that night, when Sophia woke in the hospital room and found him sitting by the window, he did not offer excuses.

He said, “I failed to protect your peace because I was afraid of making a scene.”

Sophia looked at him for a long time.

Then she answered, “Now we’ve had the scene.”

May you like

He nodded.

“And now,” she said, “you don’t get to be afraid of truth.”
