The Marriage That Was Erased

Chapter 02 - The Marriage That Was Erased

Daniel ordered the breakfast hall sealed and called Dr. Maya Chen, the physician who had cared for Ashford employees for twenty years.

Victoria demanded that Elena be removed.

Daniel ignored her.

Maya examined Elena in a private sitting room. The porridge had mostly struck the apron and floor. Elena and the baby were physically stable, though stress had raised her blood pressure.

Daniel waited outside with the ultrasound photograph.

Noah’s name appeared beside the clinic identification number.

A second document inside the envelope was a marriage certificate.

Elena Cruz and Noah James Ashford had married eleven months earlier in a small courthouse two counties away.

The certificate carried a judge’s seal and two witness signatures.

Daniel searched the state database.

No record appeared.

Family attorney Victor Sloan arrived before anyone called him.

He glanced once at the certificate.

“It is fraudulent.”

Elena looked at him.

“You filed the cancellation.”

Victor corrected himself too quickly.

“I mean the document was never legally registered.”

Daniel noticed.

“How would you know?”

Victor said Noah had briefly considered marrying Elena but changed his mind after learning she had lied about her background.

Elena opened her phone and played a video.

Noah stood beside her beneath a courthouse arch, laughing as he attempted to place a simple silver ring on the wrong finger.

“I, Noah Ashford, choose Elena Cruz freely and completely,” he said.

The video ended with the judge pronouncing them married.

Daniel sat down.

Victoria remained standing.

“Noah was vulnerable,” she said. “He was grieving and confused.”

“Grieving what?” Daniel asked.

Victoria did not answer.

Elena explained that Noah discovered someone had removed their marriage record after his yacht disappeared.

She entered Ashford Manor as temporary staff because every email, letter, and legal request she sent was intercepted.

“I was not hiding from you,” she told Daniel. “Your family made sure I could not reach you.”

The breakfast-hall recording downloaded to an independent server.

It showed Victoria tipping the bowl and demanding the envelope.

The accusation that Elena threw it collapsed before it could become official.

But the recording also captured Victor whispering near the doorway:

“If the marriage is recognized, the child activates Noah’s trust.”
