The Staff Dining Room

Chapter 09 - The Staff Dining Room

Ashford employees gathered in the flagship hotel’s staff dining room.

Cooks, cleaners, receptionists, engineers, drivers, and retired workers filled every chair.

For years, the Hearth Foundation had been presented as Victoria’s generosity.

The ledgers showed workers partly funded it through payroll deductions.

Their own money paid for public galas honoring the Ashford family.

A dishwasher named Samuel Brooks had lost his pension after the company sold employee housing.

A school cook named Rosa Martinez had reported missing meal deliveries and been blacklisted from Ashford properties.

A banquet chef saved photographs of charity food being served at private investor dinners.

The system had not been hidden from everyone.

It survived because each witness believed they stood alone.

Noah attended by secure video.

He proposed activating the Hearth Trust immediately rather than waiting for the child’s birth.

The original will allowed early transfer if medical fraud threatened an heir.

Elena supported him.

Daniel would lose family control of the company.

He supported the transfer too.

Victoria’s board allies warned that employee governance would frighten investors and close hotels.

Samuel Brooks stood.

“You said the same thing every time you cut our benefits. The hotels survived. We were the ones expected not to.”

The workers voted to accept a permanent trust holding Noah’s shares and recovered foundation assets.

Noah and Elena kept personal security, not a private empire.

Their unborn child would inherit a family story, not control over thousands of jobs.
