Chapter 4 - THE BOX WITH HER NAMEAdrian broke three traffic laws getting downtown.

Grace sat beside him because he had refused to leave her at the house alone, and because she had refused to stay behind anyway.
The storm arrived halfway across the bridge.
Rain hammered the windshield.
“You’re driving too fast,” Grace said.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re doing ninety.”
“I said I’m fine.”
“You also believed Vivian for almost thirty seconds beside that pool.”
The words cut.
Adrian took his foot off the accelerator.
Grace immediately regretted saying it.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
He stared through the rain.
“You’re right.”
Grace looked at him.
“That wasn’t fair.”
“It was true.”
Adrian’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“I saw you holding Leo and assumed the worst.”
“You were scared.”
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No.”
Her answer surprised him.
Most people would have rushed to make him feel better.
Grace didn’t.
Maybe that was why he trusted her.
Or maybe trust was exactly the thing he should stop giving so easily.
They reached the storage facility fourteen minutes later.
Marcus waited across the street.
“Damon left five minutes ago.”
“With the box?”
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the building.
“He left it?”
Marcus nodded.
“Unit 314.”
“How do we get in?”
“We don’t legally.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Marcus had worked for him long enough to understand that wasn’t going to matter.
The facility manager became much more cooperative after Adrian mentioned the police, a possible child endangerment investigation, and his attorneys.
Ten minutes later, Unit 314 opened.
A single fluorescent light flickered overhead.
There were six boxes.
One had Elena’s name.
Adrian stopped at the threshold.
For three years he had tried to learn how to enter rooms that still contained her memory.
Her closet.
Leo’s nursery.
The beach house.
This was different.
Someone else had collected pieces of her life.
Hidden them.
Grace touched his shoulder.
“You don’t have to open it tonight.”
“Yes.”
He stepped inside.
The box smelled like paper and dust.
Inside were copies of Cole Foundation bank statements.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
A small notebook.
And Elena’s laptop.
Adrian almost dropped it.
He recognized the silver dent near the corner from the night Leo knocked it off the kitchen counter.
“This disappeared after the accident.”
Grace looked at him.
“You thought it was lost?”
“I thought it was in the car.”
Police had returned Elena’s phone, purse, and jewelry.
Not the laptop.
Adrian picked it up carefully.
Underneath sat an envelope.
His name was written across the front.
ADRIAN.
Elena’s handwriting.
Grace stepped backward.
“That’s yours.”
Adrian opened it.
The letter inside was dated nine days before Elena died.
His hands began to shake.
My love,
If you are reading this because I finally found the courage to show you, then you’re probably furious that I kept secrets. You have every right to be.
He stopped.
Grace turned away, giving him privacy.
Adrian continued.
Someone inside Cole Development has been moving money through shell companies connected to the foundation. I thought it was accounting fraud. I don’t anymore.
His throat tightened.
I found contracts connected to land purchases that never happened, contractors who do not exist, and insurance policies attached to projects that were never built. Damon’s authorization appears on several documents. I confronted him indirectly. He lied to me.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then forced himself to continue.
Please do not confront him alone.
That sentence nearly broke him.
Elena had known exactly what Adrian would do.
There is something else. Damon is not working by himself. I believe someone is feeding him private family information. I do not know who.
The final paragraph was shorter.
If anything happens to me, protect Leo. Trust Grace Miller if she ever comes to you. I know we have been apart, but she is loyal where it matters. And Adrian—please forgive me for not telling you sooner. I loved you more than my fear.
Adrian lowered the letter.
Grace was crying silently.
He handed it to her.
She read it.
“She knew.”
Adrian looked at the laptop.
“She knew enough to be scared.”
Marcus approached.
“Sir, we should take everything.”
Adrian nodded.
They documented the unit before touching anything else.
The second box contained corporate documents.
The third contained photographs of Adrian’s house.
The photographs were recent.
Grace carrying Leo.
Adrian leaving for work.
Vivian entering her car.
Adrian stared.
“Somebody was watching us.”
Marcus examined the dates.
“These go back six months.”
The fourth box changed everything again.
Inside were photographs of Vivian and Damon.
Together.
Restaurants.
Hotel lobbies.
A parking garage.
Not three months.
The earliest photo was dated eleven months ago.
Long before Vivian met Adrian.
Grace whispered, “She knew him first.”
Adrian felt something inside him shut down.
Vivian had not accidentally entered his life.
She had been placed there.
The fifth box held copies of medical records.
Adrian’s.
Leo’s.
Elena’s.
Grace backed away.
“This is sick.”
Marcus lifted one document.
“Life insurance.”
Adrian read the amount.
Twenty-five million dollars.
He had known about the policy.
What he hadn’t known was that someone had requested a beneficiary change six weeks before Elena died.
The change had been rejected because Elena’s signature did not match.
Adrian stared at the attempted signature.
Someone had forged his wife’s name.
The sixth box contained one item.
A prepaid phone.
Marcus powered it on.
There were dozens of text messages.
Most used initials.
D.
V.
And someone called R.
Grace leaned closer.
The newest conversation was from that afternoon.
V: The nanny is becoming a problem.
D: Handle it without involving me.
V: She keeps watching me.
D: Then give Adrian a reason not to trust her.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
The next message had been sent at 4:04.
Thirteen minutes before Leo fell.
V: Today.
Damon replied two minutes later.
D: Don’t be stupid.
Then:
V: Too late.
Grace sat down hard.
Adrian continued scrolling.
At 4:27:
V: CAMERA.
At 4:28:
D: I’m trying.
There it was.
No ambiguity.
No innocent explanation.
Damon had attempted to erase the video.
Grace looked at Adrian.
“He knew Leo could have died.”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he was looking at the final message.
Sent at 4:43.
After the camera footage had already been discovered.
From Damon.
D: If this falls apart, we use Elena.
Vivian responded.
V: Grace knows too much.
Marcus immediately began photographing the screen.
Adrian took the phone.
“What does ‘use Elena’ mean?”
No one knew.
Then the prepaid phone rang.
All three froze.
The display showed one letter.
R.
Marcus whispered, “Answer it.”
Adrian did.
He said nothing.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
“Damon?”
Adrian remained silent.
“Damon, answer me.”
Grace stared at him.
Adrian finally said, “He can’t come to the phone.”
Silence.
Then the man laughed.
Not surprised.
Almost amused.
“Adrian.”
Adrian’s blood went cold.
“You know me?”
“Oh, I know you.”
“Who is this?”
“You should have left Elena’s box alone.”
Grace looked toward the storage-unit entrance.
Marcus reached for his weapon.
Adrian’s voice stayed calm.
“Who are you?”
The man ignored him.
“You think Vivian is your problem.”
“She tried to hurt my son.”
“No.”
The man’s voice hardened.
“Vivian tried to save herself.”
“From what?”
“From the same thing Elena couldn’t.”
Adrian’s heartbeat thundered.
“What did you do to my wife?”
The man laughed again.
“You’re still asking the wrong question.”
The line went dead.
Adrian stared at the phone.
Grace whispered, “What’s the right question?”
The answer came from the storage facility itself.
The lights went out.
Total darkness.
Marcus swore.
A metal door slammed somewhere down the corridor.
Then came the unmistakable smell of smoke.
“Fire,” Grace whispered.
Adrian grabbed Elena’s box.
Marcus grabbed Grace.
“Move!”
Smoke began pouring under the door of Unit 314.
Someone had not called to scare them.
May you like
Someone had called to keep them inside.
And the only exit was already burning.
