Chapter 9 - BOX 317First Federal opened at nine.

Adrian was waiting at eight-thirty.

Grace stood beside him.

Evelyn carried the trust documents.

Two detectives waited in an unmarked car.

Marcus had three security officers positioned nearby.

Damon was in custody.

Vivian was cooperating with police in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

Richard Vale remained missing.

At exactly nine, the bank manager unlocked the front doors.

By 9:19, Adrian stood inside the vault.

Box 317 rested on a metal table.

Elena’s key was technically missing, but the bank drilled the lock under court authorization.

The lid opened.

Adrian expected documents.

There were documents.

But there was also a small video camera.

A flash drive.

A sealed envelope.

And a necklace.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

A tiny gold sun.

He had given it to Elena on their first anniversary.

She had stopped wearing it months before the accident.

He thought she had lost it.

Grace touched his shoulder.

Adrian picked up the envelope.

FOR ADRIAN AND LEO.

Inside were two letters.

One for Adrian.

One marked:

FOR LEO WHEN HE IS OLD ENOUGH.

Adrian couldn’t open Leo’s.

Not yet.

He unfolded his own.

Adrian,

If you’re reading this, then either I finally told you everything or I ran out of time.

Adrian sat down.

Grace moved away.

Richard Vale is alive. Damon has been helping him. I believe Damon is trapped as much as he is guilty, but I no longer know which part of him will win.

Adrian swallowed.

Even frightened, Elena had seen people clearly.

The money is only the surface. Richard believes my father stole intellectual property and land rights from him when their partnership ended. He wants Cole Development because he believes our company was built partly with assets that should have belonged to him. Legally, he has little claim. Emotionally, he believes everything belongs to him.

The next paragraph was underlined.

He will use Leo.

Adrian’s chest tightened.

That is why I changed the trust. Grace is the only person outside our household I trust completely. If anything happens to you and me, she protects Leo’s shares.

Adrian looked toward Grace.

She was staring through the vault doorway.

He continued.

There is something else you deserve to know.

His heart accelerated.

I had a DNA test performed.

The mysterious laboratory report.

Not because I doubted you were Leo’s father. You are.

Adrian exhaled.

He hadn’t realized how much tension he carried until it disappeared.

The second sample belonged to Richard Vale.

Adrian frowned.

Then he read the next sentence.

Richard is biologically related to my father.

Grace heard him gasp.

“What?”

Adrian handed her the letter.

She read.

Richard Vale was not simply Thomas Mercer’s former business partner.

He was Thomas Mercer’s half-brother.

A secret their family had buried for decades.

Richard therefore believed he had been cheated not only by a partner but by his own blood.

The DNA test proved the relationship.

It did not give him ownership of Mercer assets.

But Richard believed it did.

“There’s more,” Grace whispered.

Adrian read the final section.

Richard wants the DNA evidence destroyed because it proves something he has denied publicly for years. His identity, foreign accounts, and several shell companies are tied to false declarations about his family history. I sent copies to an attorney. The original evidence is here.

Adrian looked at the flash drive.

“That’s what he wanted.”

Grace nodded.

“Not only the company.”

“His freedom.”

They connected the drive to an offline laptop.

Hundreds of documents appeared.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Recorded calls.

Passport scans.

Corporate registrations.

Enough evidence to establish an international fraud network extending more than a decade.

Then they opened Elena’s video.

She appeared on-screen.

Alive.

Sitting in the bedroom Adrian had shared with her.

Grace cried immediately.

Adrian couldn’t.

He felt too much.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“Adrian, I know you’re going to be angry.”

A tiny smile.

“I can already see your face.”

Adrian laughed through tears.

Grace squeezed his hand.

Elena continued.

“But listen before you go charging after anyone.”

She explained Richard.

Damon.

The foundation.

The trust.

Then her expression changed.

“If something happens to me, do not blame yourself.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“You could not have protected me from something you did not know existed.”

Grace began sobbing.

“And please don’t let grief turn our home into a museum.”

Adrian laughed again.

She had known.

She had known exactly what he had done.

“I want Leo to remember joy. Even if he doesn’t remember me.”

Adrian could barely breathe.

Then Elena said something unexpected.

“And if Grace ever comes back into your life, be kind to her.”

Grace stared.

“She’ll pretend she doesn’t need anyone. She’s very annoying that way.”

Grace laughed through tears.

“Still rude.”

Elena smiled.

“She loves fiercely. People like that sometimes forget they’re allowed to be loved too.”

The recording ended.

Neither Adrian nor Grace spoke for a long time.

Then Marcus entered.

“Sir.”

Adrian immediately knew something was wrong.

“What?”

“Richard contacted Vivian.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“What does he want?”

Marcus handed over the phone.

Vivian had received one message.

TELL ADRIAN HE HAS SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO ME. MIDNIGHT. COLE TOWER. COME WITH THE DRIVE OR PEOPLE START FALLING.

Grace read it.

“Cole Tower?”

Adrian nodded.

Their company headquarters.

Forty-two stories.

Nearly six hundred employees on weekdays.

“What does ‘people start falling’ mean?”

Marcus’s face was grim.

“We checked building security.”

“And?”

“Someone entered the mechanical levels last night.”

Adrian stared.

“Richard.”

“Probably.”

“Evacuate the building.”

“Already happening.”

Adrian looked at Elena’s flash drive.

Richard was desperate.

Desperate people made mistakes.

Grace seemed to read his mind.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“You’re thinking about going.”

“I am going.”

“No.”

“He wants me.”

“He wants the drive.”

“I can give him one.”

Grace stared.

“A copy.”

Adrian nodded.

“We get him talking.”

“And if he realizes?”

“Police will be inside.”

Grace folded her arms.

“So will I.”

“Absolutely not.”

She laughed.

“You’re adorable when you think that works.”

Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.

By eleven-thirty that night, Cole Tower was empty.

Or supposed to be.

Adrian entered through the lobby carrying a flash drive.

Grace remained inside a surveillance van with Marcus and detectives.

At least that was the plan.

Adrian rode the elevator to the fortieth floor.

The doors opened.

Darkness.

“Richard?”

A light came on.

Richard Vale stood beside the windows.

Seventy years old.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Perfect posture.

He looked less like a criminal than a retired senator.

“You look like your father,” Richard said.

Adrian stepped out.

“You knew my father?”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“I studied everyone connected to the Mercers.”

“Where’s the threat?”

“All around you.”

Adrian looked toward the windows.

Richard held out his hand.

“The drive.”

“First tell me why Elena died.”

Richard sighed.

“Still sentimental.”

“You murdered her.”

“No.”

“You ordered Caleb to damage her brakes.”

“I ordered him to frighten her.”

“That excuse seems popular.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Your wife was stubborn.”

“She was smarter than you.”

“She was emotional.”

“She beat you.”

Richard’s face hardened.

Adrian continued.

“She moved the trust. She hid the evidence. She kept you out for three years.”

Richard stepped forward.

“The drive.”

Adrian lifted it.

“Confess.”

“To what?”

“Everything.”

Richard laughed.

“You’re recording me.”

Adrian said nothing.

Richard moved faster than expected.

A gun appeared.

“Drop it.”

Adrian froze.

“Now.”

The drive hit the floor.

Richard picked it up.

Then a sound came from the elevator.

Grace.

“Adrian?”

Richard smiled.

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

Grace stepped onto the floor.

Her face changed when she saw the gun.

Richard laughed softly.

“Elena did say she was loyal.”

Adrian stared at Grace.

“What are you doing?”

“Apparently making bad choices.”

Richard pointed the weapon at her.

“Come here.”

Grace obeyed.

Richard picked up the drive.

“Now I have the evidence.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

Richard frowned.

Adrian smiled.

“You have a blank flash drive.”

Richard’s face changed.

Police sirens erupted outside.

Red lights appeared through the windows.

Richard grabbed Grace.

Gun against her side.

“You stupid boy.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Richard shouted.

“Stay back!”

The elevator doors opened.

Damon stepped out.

Everyone froze.

Richard stared.

“What are you doing here?”

Damon looked at Adrian.

Then Grace.

Then the gun.

“Something I should have done three years ago.”

He faced Richard.

“I’m done being afraid of you.”

Richard laughed.

“You’re nothing without me.”

Damon nodded.

“I know.”

Then he reached into his jacket.

Richard swung the gun toward him.

A shot exploded.

Grace screamed.

Damon fell.

Police flooded the floor.

Richard grabbed Grace and backed toward the shattered emergency exit.

Adrian ran.

Richard disappeared through the stairwell with Grace.

And Adrian followed.

May you like

Because three years earlier he had been too late to save Elena.

He refused to be too late again.
