The Man From The Charity

Chapter 11 - The Man From The Charity

The man at the tunnel entrance wore a raincoat too expensive for the river road.

He was in his fifties, silver hair, calm smile, no umbrella. Two men stood behind him, large shapes in the rain. He looked less like someone searching for a missing woman and more like someone arriving to collect misplaced property.

Ruiz moved beside Miller.

“Identify yourself,” she called.

The man smiled. “Nathaniel Price. I represent the Hartwell Family Foundation.”

Miller recognized the name from the memory cards.

“Interesting place for philanthropy,” Ruiz said.

Price ignored her. His eyes fixed on Lena. “You’ve caused a great deal of trouble.”

Lena tried to stand and failed.

Miller stepped between them.

Price’s smile cooled. “Officer, this woman is unstable. She abducted an infant from a lawful placement situation.”

Miller felt anger rise, but kept his voice flat. “The baby is safe.”

“She belongs with her approved family.”

“She has a name.”

Price tilted his head.

“Hope,” Miller said.

For the first time, Price’s expression cracked.

Small. Brief. Enough.

Ruiz noticed too.

Sirens grew louder behind them. More patrol cars. Medics. Backup. Price’s two men shifted, suddenly less confident.

Price adjusted his cuffs. “You are interfering with sealed proceedings you don’t understand.”

Miller looked at him through the rain. “Then unseal them.”

That ended the conversation.

Price tried to leave before backup boxed in the road, but the storm had slowed his timing. Officers intercepted him near the service gate. He did not run. Men like Price rarely run. They expect doors to open.

This time, the doors stayed closed.

Medics reached Lena.

As they loaded her carefully, she grabbed Miller’s wrist.

“Hope?”

“At the station.”

“Don’t let anyone rename her.”

May you like

Miller covered her hand with his.

“No one will.”
