The Car In The Rain

Chapter 07 - The Car In The Rain
The first useful image came from a traffic camera two blocks from Bell’s Grocery.
Rain blurred most of it. Headlights streaked across the frame. A dark sedan turned too fast toward the alley behind the store at 11:42 p.m. Seven seconds later, a woman crossed the far edge of the image, running with no bundle in her arms.
Lena.
Miller knew her shape before the image was clarified.
She looked back once.
Then disappeared between two buildings.
The sedan followed.
Miller watched the clip twice without speaking. Ethan sat nearby wrapped in a blanket, refusing to leave the desk because the note and seed packet were there. Hope had been moved only a few feet away for a medical check, still in sight, still wrapped in the same pink blanket.
A detective named Carla Ruiz arrived with wet boots and a sharp stare.
“You’re telling me a missing woman gave a baby to a child during a storm and left a seed packet as evidence?”
Miller nodded.
Ruiz looked at the baby.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the packet.
“Of course she did,” Ruiz said. “Because normal cases are apparently canceled tonight.”
Miller almost smiled.
Ruiz picked up the printed still of the sedan. “Plate?”
“Covered in mud.”
“Convenient.”
“Very.”
The wet note had been photographed and placed in evidence. The writing was being stabilized, but the visible words were enough to pull Lena’s missing person case out of the slow pile and into emergency motion.
Ethan leaned forward. “Can you find her?”
Ruiz did not lie.
“We’re going to try very hard.”
“That’s what adults say when they don’t know.”
Miller looked at him.
This boy had carried a newborn through rain, traffic, fear, and strangers. He had earned better than easy comfort.
“You’re right,” Miller said. “We don’t know yet. But now we have a direction.”

He pointed to the seed packet.
“And Lena gave us that.”
