The Baby Named Hope / Chapter 15 / 19

The Approved Family

Chapter 15 - The Approved Family

The approved family arrived with lawyers before breakfast.

They did not come to the station lobby. People with money rarely enter through front doors when side offices are available. A couple named Warren and Elise Caldwell sat in an interview room with two attorneys, a private adoption consultant, and enough outrage to fill the walls.

They claimed Hope had been lawfully placed with them.

They claimed Lena had stolen her.

They claimed the baby had another name.

Miller listened without expression.

“What name?” Ruiz asked.

Elise hesitated.

The attorney answered for her. “That is private.”

Miller looked at Ruiz.

People who loved a baby usually said the name first.

The Caldwells produced documents. Clean. Stamped. Impressive. Possibly fraudulent. Miller did not accuse them yet. Accusations without proof gave wealthy people time to rebuild walls.

Instead, he asked, “Who was the birth mother?”

The room stiffened.

The consultant smiled. “The mother requested confidentiality.”

Miller placed the evidence photograph on the table, angled down at first. “Did she request that before or after she named the baby Hope?”

Elise Caldwell’s face changed.

Tiny.

But enough.

Warren looked at his attorney.

The attorney said, “We’re done here.”

Miller nodded. “For now.”

As they stood, Elise looked toward the hallway where a uniformed officer blocked access to the protected nursery room.

For one second, her face showed not love, but possession interrupted.

Miller saw it.

So did Ruiz.

When the door closed behind them, Ruiz muttered, “I hate rich panic.”

Miller picked up the folder.

“Good. There’s more coming.”
