The Mother’s Name

Chapter 16 - The Mother’s Name
Hope’s mother was named Marisol Vega.
She was nineteen, according to the first file. Twenty, according to the second. Unemployed, unstable, unfit, according to the charity notes. But the photograph from the seed library showed a different woman: exhausted, frightened, and fiercely awake while holding her baby.
Lena’s recovered recording filled in the missing truth.
Marisol had gone to the Hartwell Foundation for prenatal housing after being kicked out by her stepfather. She believed the program would help her keep the baby. Instead, workers pressured her to sign temporary guardianship forms after delivery. When she refused, the paperwork shifted. Her mental health history became exaggerated. Her support system became “nonexistent.” Her questions became “agitation.”
Lena was assigned to infant care in the recovery apartment.
She heard Marisol begging to see her baby.
She began recording.
Then Marisol disappeared from the facility.
Official note: voluntary discharge.
Lena’s note: taken out back after midnight, no belongings.
Miller read the line three times.
No body had been found. No hospital admission under her name. No shelter intake matching her. Missing, like Lena had been. Erased, like Hope was supposed to be.
Ethan sat nearby with a coloring book someone had brought him, though he had not colored anything.
“Is Hope’s mom alive?” he asked.
Miller did not know.
“I hope so,” he said.
Ethan looked at him. “That’s her name.”
Miller managed a small smile.
“Yes. It is.”
The boy picked up a crayon and finally drew something.
A pink blanket.

A rain cloud.
And a little brown seed packet.
