The Doctor Breaks

Chapter 15 - The Doctor Breaks
Dr. Conrad Mills broke after forty-eight hours of questioning.
Not because of guilt.
Because the clinic’s owners refused to protect him.
He admitted Victoria approached him two months before Emma’s delivery. She knew the hospital from Daniel’s charitable foundation. She knew Emma’s due date because a private investigator followed her. The plan required only a few altered entries, a sedative, and a transfer between recovery suites.
Victoria promised Mills enough money to retire.
She also promised the Ashford family would defend the clinic if questions arose.
Mills signed a cooperation agreement.
He described how Emma’s newborn was given a second patient number. How the stillbirth record belonged to another case, copied and modified. How an unclaimed infant transport form was used to move Noah to Victoria’s suite. How staff were told Emma had signed a private placement agreement.
He admitted the baby cried when separated.
Emma left the room during that part.
Henry found her in the courthouse hallway, standing beside a window.
“I want him to stop talking,” she said.
Henry stayed several feet away.
Marcus had taught him not to turn every moment into an apology.
“He has to finish,” Henry said.
“I know.”
“Do you want me to stay?”
Emma looked at him.
He was no longer the man on the staircase, confident that truth could be fixed by authority. He looked older. More careful. Maybe useful.
“Yes.”
They stood without speaking.
Inside, Mills explained that Rachel tried to intervene. Security escorted her out. Victoria arrived wearing a hospital robe over her clothes, held Noah for a photographer, then left through a private garage.
When the statement ended, prosecutors added charges.
Mills apologized to Emma as officers led him away.
She did not accept it.
“I hope you spend every day remembering the sound he made when you took him.”
Mills lowered his eyes.
Henry watched Emma return to the courtroom.
She was not cruel.
She was refusing to make his remorse easier than her recovery.
That distinction mattered.
By evening, the clinic’s board resigned.
St. Catherine’s closed its maternity wing pending investigation.
Other women began calling attorneys.

Emma’s case was no longer one family scandal.
It was a door opening onto a hallway full of stolen truths.
