The House Without Victoria

Chapter 16 - The House Without Victoria

Ashford House changed after Victoria was removed.

At first, the change was only absence. Her perfume vanished from the foyer. Her portrait was taken from the upstairs hall. Staff stopped lowering their voices near doorways. The east nursery stood open.

Emma moved into a guest suite temporarily because the court required security around Noah. She resisted every luxury Henry offered.

“No private chef.”

“Understood.”

“No designer nursery.”

“Understood.”

“No staff calling me ma’am.”

Henry hesitated. “That may be harder.”

Emma almost smiled.

She brought her own secondhand crib from the apartment. Henry helped assemble it badly, reading instructions upside down until Emma took them from him.

“You own hotels.”

“I do not build the beds.”

“That explains several reviews.”

It was the first joke they shared.

The mansion remained complicated. Emma could not forget that Victoria held Noah in the same foyer and told her he was dead. Some nights, Emma woke believing the cradle was empty. She crossed the room and touched Noah’s back until she felt breathing.

Henry heard her pacing once but did not enter.

The next morning, he asked if she wanted a therapist who specialized in birth trauma and abduction.

Emma said yes.

Not because she was weak.

Because Victoria had used the threat of mental illness against her, and Emma refused to let that theft continue.

Henry began his own therapy after Marcus told him guilt was making him overcorrect. He wanted to give Emma property, shares, protection, influence. Emma wanted control over her own front door.

They agreed she would choose later whether to remain connected to Ashford House.

For now, Noah needed stability.

The staff began calling him Noah instead of Alexander. The name changed room by room until the false identity disappeared from ordinary speech.

One afternoon, Emma stood in the foyer where Henry had taken the baby from Victoria.

Noah slept against her shoulder.

Henry approached but stopped at a respectful distance.

“Does this house feel like his home?” he asked.

Emma looked around.

“No.”

Henry nodded.

“Then we will not make it one.”

That answer mattered more than any deed.
