The Nurse Who Disappeared

Chapter 07 - The Nurse Who Disappeared

Rachel Gomez had not disappeared voluntarily.

After Emma’s delivery, the nurse was transferred to a rural clinic owned by the same medical group. Her email access was removed. Her supervisor warned that discussing the Ashford case would violate patient privacy and destroy her career.

Rachel stayed silent for seventeen days.

Then she saw Victoria’s society photograph.

The baby in the image wore the blanket Rachel had tied with blue thread. Rachel knew because she had hidden the blanket after administrators ordered her to replace it. Someone found it anyway.

She called Henry Ashford’s office.

An assistant marked the message as a solicitation.

Rachel called again and used Daniel’s name.

That message reached Henry after his return from Geneva.

They met in the mansion library while Emma waited upstairs near the nursery. Rachel arrived in plain clothes, carrying no files, only fear.

“I saw the child alive,” she told Henry.

Henry’s attorney, Marcus Shaw, recorded the statement with permission.

Rachel explained that Dr. Mills ordered a heavy sedative after Emma refused adoption documents. The newborn was taken to a private recovery suite under another patient number. Rachel was told the mother had signed a confidential placement agreement. When she challenged the order, security removed her.

“Who received the baby?” Henry asked.

Rachel looked toward the library door.

“Mrs. Victoria Ashford.”

Henry’s hand tightened on the desk.

“Did Daniel authorize any of this?”

“No. The paperwork used an embryo transfer story. But the baby was born to Emma Collins.”

Rachel produced one item from her coat pocket: a photograph she had taken of the bassinet before being removed. The baby’s hospital bracelet was visible beside Emma’s patient number.

No readable text was needed for Emma to recognize the bracelet’s color and shape.

“Why did you keep this?” Emma asked.

Rachel’s eyes filled. “Because they made me walk away from you.”

Emma looked down.

People had failed her in different ways. Some for money. Some for fear. Some because institutions make cowardice feel procedural.

Rachel reached across the table.

“I am sorry.”

Emma took her hand.

“Help me get him back.”

Rachel nodded.

Henry looked at Marcus.

“What do we need?”

“A court order, an emergency custody petition, and DNA.”

Henry looked toward the ceiling, where the nursery waited.

“Then we start tonight.”
