Daniel’s Version

Chapter 10 - Daniel’s Version
Daniel issued his public statement from a lawyer’s office.
He admitted arguing with Claire but denied planning the crash. He claimed Mason acted independently after misunderstanding a request to inspect the car. He described the transfer papers as ordinary protection during medical recovery.
Then he attacked Arthur.
He accused the Whitmore chairman of manipulating an injured daughter to regain control of the company. He said Arthur staged the hospital confrontation and assaulted him without cause. Photographs showed bruising on Daniel’s neck from the corridor struggle.
Some people believed him.
Arthur had a history of aggressive business tactics. Whitmore Global had faced labor disputes, environmental complaints, and political investigations. Daniel’s team framed the conflict as one powerful man destroying a less powerful son-in-law.
Claire read the statement twice.
The lie worked because it contained true pieces.
Arthur had pushed him.
Arthur was powerful.
The family had corporate scandals.
Claire was injured and medicated.
Mara advised responding with evidence rather than outrage.
Claire agreed.
The full camera footage was provided to investigators and an independent journalist under protective terms. The journalist verified the lock, the documents, Daniel’s grip on Claire’s wrist, and Arthur entering only after the fist rose.
Then Mason’s confession became public through court filings.
Daniel changed his version again.
He now claimed the brake incident was designed by a rogue executive to force the hospital vote. He had only discovered it afterward and panicked.
The phone recording disproved that.
Each new explanation fit the evidence less.
Claire watched supporters quietly disappear from Daniel’s social pages. Executives stopped returning calls. His own attorney withdrew after learning the transfer documents were prepared before the crash.
But Daniel still had one weapon.
He petitioned family court for access to the unborn child Claire had not yet announced publicly.
The filing revealed her pregnancy.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Claire stood at the window as camera lights gathered below.
Daniel had taken another private fact and used it as leverage.
She placed both hands over her abdomen.
Then called Mara.
“He wants the world to discuss my child?”
Mara waited.
Claire’s voice steadied.
“Then the court will discuss why he should never control access to us.”

The next battle would not be over shares.
It would be over a life Daniel already considered property.
