The Trial Behind Glass

Chapter 16 - The Trial Behind Glass
Daniel’s trial began seven months after the hospital confrontation.
The courtroom used a glass partition around the defendant area because of security concerns. Claire noticed the irony immediately. Daniel had once stood beyond hospital glass believing privacy protected him. Now transparent walls contained him while everyone watched.
The charges included attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, unlawful surveillance, coercive control, and obstruction.
Daniel wore a dark suit.
He looked calm.
The prosecution played the doorway footage first. The jury saw Claire crying on the bed, Daniel’s raised hand, Arthur entering, and the corridor struggle. The clip ended with Arthur holding Claire’s face.
Daniel’s attorney called it misleading emotion.
Then evidence added structure.
The brake line.
The schedule.
The transfer documents.
The phone recording.
The hospital-sale payments.
The transmitter inside the lilies.
Paul’s testimony.
Mason’s confession.
Victor’s calibration records.
Daniel did not testify.
Claire did.
She entered through the main courtroom doors with Mara. Arthur remained seated behind her and did not approach until she asked.
Daniel watched as she described the moment he admitted the crash was meant to frighten her.
His face changed only when she spoke about the unborn child.
“He did not see our baby as a person,” Claire said. “He saw another branch of the trust.”
The defense asked whether hatred influenced her testimony.
Claire answered, “I do not need to hate him for the evidence to be true.”
The jury convicted Daniel on every major count.
Before sentencing, he asked to address Claire.
The judge denied direct communication but allowed a general statement.
Daniel said he loved his wife and became desperate to protect their future.
Claire looked at the glass partition.
Love had become his final disguise.
The judge sentenced him to decades in prison and ordered restitution from hidden assets.
Outside, reporters asked Arthur whether justice had been served.
He looked toward Claire.
She answered instead.
“Justice is not the moment a dangerous man loses control. It is what we build so the next person does not need a powerful father to enter the room.”

The hospital doors had opened once.
Now Claire intended to open many more.
