The Crash On Lake Shore Drive

Chapter 02 - The Crash On Lake Shore Drive
The crash happened at 6:42 on a rainy Monday morning.
Claire had been driving to the Whitmore Foundation office when her brakes stopped responding near Lake Shore Drive. She pumped the pedal, pulled the emergency brake, and turned the steering wheel toward an empty construction barrier rather than the line of cars ahead.
The impact folded the front of the sedan.
Her airbag opened.
Her last clear memory was a man in a dark coat reaching through the broken window and removing her phone before paramedics arrived.
Daniel appeared at the hospital twenty minutes later.
He told police Claire had been exhausted, anxious, and distracted because she was arguing with her estranged father. He gave doctors a medication list Claire had never seen. He claimed she suffered panic episodes and might make irrational accusations after waking.
The performance worked.
Daniel was calm.
Claire was unconscious.
Arthur’s number was missing from her phone.
The hospital accepted Daniel as next of kin.
He requested a private room. He limited visitors. He told nurses the Whitmore family created security risks. When Claire woke, he sat beside her holding her hand and spoke softly.
“You nearly killed yourself.”
Claire believed him for six minutes.
Then she remembered the brake pedal sinking with no resistance.
She remembered Daniel taking her car to “fix a warning light” the night before.
She remembered the cold man at the window.
When she asked for her father, Daniel smiled.
“Arthur knows. He chose not to come.”
That lie hurt more than the crash.
Claire turned her face toward the wall.
Daniel left the room and began calling lawyers.
He had less than twelve hours before independent investigators examined the car. He needed Claire’s signature transferring trust authority to him. Once he controlled the family shares, he could block the investigation, dismiss the foundation’s security team, and authorize the sale he had planned for months.
But one paramedic had noticed something strange.
Claire’s phone was gone before Daniel arrived.
And the stranger who took it had been photographed by a traffic camera.
The image reached Arthur Whitmore before sunset.

He recognized the man.
Daniel’s private driver.
