The Driver Who Took The Phone

Chapter 07 - The Driver Who Took The Phone
The missing driver was named Mason Reed.
He was thirty-nine, divorced, and deeply in debt. Daniel paid him through three shell companies. Investigators traced Mason to a motel near the Wisconsin border after his former wife reported that he left a bag of cash and asked her to take their son out of state.
Police arrested him without resistance.
Mason confessed within six hours.
Daniel hired him to create a “minor brake scare.” Mason was told Claire would travel slowly through city traffic and the emergency brake would remain functional. He cut the line, applied the temporary seal, and followed her route.
When Claire chose the construction barrier, the impact became more severe than expected.
Mason reached the car before paramedics because Daniel ordered him to remove the phone and any dashboard storage device. He took the phone but failed to find the vehicle’s event recorder hidden beneath the passenger seat.
That recorder contained location data and a cabin microphone.
Audio captured Claire calling Daniel minutes before the crash.
“The brake warning is back,” she said.
Daniel answered, “Keep driving. I had it checked.”
His voice connected the plan directly to the vehicle.
Mason also revealed why Daniel wanted the phone.
Claire had recorded a conversation three nights earlier in which he discussed the hospital sale with an executive. She told him she planned to give it to Mara.
Daniel searched the phone after the crash but could not unlock the encrypted folder. He ordered Mason to destroy it.
Mason hid the device instead.
Police recovered it from a storage locker.
The recording showed Daniel promising executives he would control Claire’s vote “after Monday.” He laughed when someone asked whether she might resist.
“She’ll be in no condition to make decisions.”
Claire listened once.
Then asked Mara to stop the audio.
Arthur stood at the window, fists tight.
“I could kill him.”
Claire looked at her father.
“No.”
The word was calm.
“I have already lived around one man who thought anger gave him authority. I will not build safety from another.”
Arthur turned.
Shame crossed his face.
Claire softened.
“You entered the room when I needed you. Now stay beside me without becoming him.”
Arthur nodded.

It was harder than fighting Daniel.
That was why it mattered.
