Chapter 4 - THE SECURITY LOG

Daniel did not reach for his weapon.

That mattered.

Luca stood three feet away from him in the narrow corridor at Union Station, one hand still holding the silent prepaid phone, the other relaxed at his side.

I had seen men look angry before.

I had seen Vanessa angry enough to burn my hand.

Luca was something else.

He looked calm.

And Daniel looked like a man standing on thin ice who had just heard the first crack.

"Explain," Luca said.

Daniel took a slow breath.

"The logs you saw were altered."

"I heard Michael."

"I altered them."

My heart kicked.

Luca did not blink.

"Why?"

"Because the original showed one of our cars leaving the estate at 11:18 p.m. with Michael inside."

"Which car?"

"Unit Seven."

Luca's face changed.

"Enzo's vehicle."

Daniel nodded.

I knew the name.

Everybody who worked at the mansion knew Enzo Moretti.

Luca's uncle came to Sunday dinner twice a month, wore old-fashioned suits, tipped staff in cash, and called everybody sweetheart whether he liked them or not.

He was charming in a way that made people lower their guard.

I suddenly remembered something Mrs. Carter once said while polishing silver.

Mr. Enzo remembers every favor he ever gives and every insult he ever receives.

Luca stepped closer to Daniel.

"Why did you alter the logs?"

Daniel's eyes dropped.

"Because my daughter was seventeen."

Nobody spoke.

He swallowed.

"The morning after Michael disappeared, I got a photograph of Sophie leaving school. A man called me. He said if I handed over the original security drive and replaced the logs, she would come home safely."

"And you believed him?"

"No. I believed what would happen if I didn't."

Luca's voice sharpened.

"You came to me. That was your job."

Daniel looked up.

"My job was to protect your family. In that moment, I chose mine."

The words struck harder than an excuse would have.

Luca turned away.

For several seconds, he stared down the empty corridor.

I could almost see him recalculating years of trust.

"Do you still have the original?" he asked.

Daniel nodded.

"I copied it before I turned the drive over."

Luca looked back.

"Where?"

"Safe deposit box under my wife's maiden name."

"Why didn't you tell me after Sophie was safe?"

Daniel's expression broke for the first time.

"Because Michael was gone. Anna disappeared. And every week after that, somebody sent me a photograph of Sophie. Grocery store. Campus. Her apartment. They wanted me to understand the threat had no expiration date."

I thought about the photograph of Emma outside nursing school.

My anger softened against my will.

I still did not trust him.

But I understood him.

Luca did too.

That was obvious from the silence.

"You're coming with me to get the drive," Luca said.

Daniel nodded.

"And after that?"

"After that I decide whether you still work for me."

We left the station before sunrise.

The city was turning gray around the edges, that strange hour when delivery trucks outnumbered cars and people carrying coffee looked like they belonged to a different universe.

We retrieved the drive from a bank vault at eight thirty.

Luca watched the footage in the back office of one of his restaurants.

The video had no sound.

At 10:56 p.m., Michael appeared in the estate garage.

He looked angry.

At 11:03, Vanessa entered.

At 11:07, Nathan Cole arrived.

At 11:12, Michael tried to leave.

Two men blocked him.

At 11:18, Enzo Moretti's black sedan rolled out through the south gate.

Michael was visible in the back seat.

Alive.

Vanessa stood beneath the garage light watching it go.

Luca froze the image.

I looked at her face on the screen.

She was not crying.

She was not frightened.

She looked relieved.

"She knew," I whispered.

"Yes," Luca said.

Daniel leaned over the desk.

"There's more."

At 11:21, Nathan handed Vanessa a folder.

At 11:24, she kissed him.

Not a polite kiss.

Not an accidental touch.

A slow kiss that lasted long enough to erase any possibility of misunderstanding.

Luca watched without reacting.

I almost wished he would react.

Instead, he said, "Send this to three separate attorneys. Not Nathan's firm. And to a federal prosecutor I know. Full copies. If anything happens to me, they release everything."

Daniel nodded.

"What about Enzo?"

"Nothing yet."

"He's behind Michael's disappearance."

"Probably."

Daniel frowned.

"Probably?"

Luca closed the laptop.

"If Enzo wanted Michael dead, Michael would be dead. Someone is paying a clinic to keep him alive. That means Michael is useful. I want to know why before Enzo knows we found him."

I thought of the payments in the Bellweather folder.

"Maybe Michael has something they need."

Luca looked at me.

"Or knows something they can't afford to have made public."

My phone rang.

Emma.

I answered immediately.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she said. "But you need to come back."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Vanessa is saying she's bleeding."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

"She says she's losing the baby. Mrs. Carter called Dr. Harris. Vanessa won't let anyone touch her unless Luca is there."

I looked at him.

He could hear Emma through the phone.

His face hardened.

"We're coming."

The mansion was chaos when we arrived.

Vanessa sat on a sofa in the east wing wrapped in a blanket, pale and shaking.

Mrs. Carter stood nearby with a bowl of water and clean towels.

Dr. Harris was unpacking equipment.

Vanessa looked at Luca and burst into tears.

"I told you this stress was dangerous."

Luca remained in the doorway.

"Are you in pain?"

"Yes."

"Then let the doctor examine you."

She clutched the blanket.

"Not with her here."

She pointed at me.

I took a step backward.

Luca did not look at me.

"Lily stays."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You think your maid belongs in this room while I lose your child?"

The cruelty in the word maid was deliberate.

I felt it.

Luca did too.

"Lily belongs wherever I ask her to be."

Dr. Harris cleared his throat.

"Mr. Moretti, I need to examine Ms. Bellini privately."

Luca nodded.

We waited in the hall.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Emma stood beside me holding my good hand.

At eighteen minutes, the door opened.

Dr. Harris came out.

His expression was carefully neutral.

"Mr. Moretti, may I speak with you?"

Vanessa called from inside.

"Tell him."

Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.

"There is no evidence of an active pregnancy complication."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Meaning?"

The doctor lowered his voice.

"Meaning I cannot confirm a pregnancy at all."

The hallway went silent.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

Her face had changed.

No tears now.

No weakness.

Only fury.

"He doesn't have the right equipment."

Dr. Harris looked at her.

"I performed two tests. Both negative."

Luca did not move.

Vanessa's eyes flashed toward me.

"This is because of her."

I stared at her.

"I didn't do anything."

"You came into my home, watched me for months, waited until you had an opening-"

"Vanessa," Luca said.

She stopped.

He stepped closer.

"You were never pregnant."

Her mouth tightened.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked at Daniel.

At Mrs. Carter.

At Emma.

At me.

Too many witnesses.

Too little control.

Then a strange calm settled over her face.

"Fine."

She lifted her chin.

"Ask your uncle."

Luca went still.

Vanessa smiled.

"Ask Enzo why I needed you married before the end of the month."

Before anyone could answer, the front doors downstairs opened.

A man's voice carried through the foyer.

Warm.

Familiar.

"Luca? I heard there was some trouble."

Enzo Moretti had arrived.

Luca did not go downstairs immediately.

He stood at the top of the staircase listening to Enzo greet one of the guards as if he had arrived for Sunday dinner.

"He always comes through the front," Luca said quietly.

Daniel looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning he wants us to know he's not afraid."

Vanessa gave a humorless laugh from the east-wing doorway.

"Or he already knows exactly what you found."

Luca turned toward her.

"How?"

She did not answer.

That silence told us enough.

I looked at my bandaged hand, suddenly remembering the speed with which Vanessa had invented the bakery story before Luca even asked me what happened.

People like her did not improvise because they were clever.

They improvised because they had been rehearsing danger for a long time.

Luca stepped down one stair, then stopped.

"Mrs. Carter, take Emma to the library and lock the interior door. Mara stays with her."

"I'm not leaving Lily," Emma said.

"You are if it keeps her from worrying about you for the next ten minutes," Luca replied.

My sister looked at me.

I nodded.

She hated it, but she went.

Luca faced Daniel.

"No one draws a weapon unless I say so. He's still my uncle."

Daniel's expression was grim.

"And Michael is still your brother."

The words hung between them.

Luca looked toward the foyer.

May you like

"That's why I want him talking."

Then he walked downstairs to greet the man whose car had carried his brother into the dark six months earlier.
