Chapter 7 - MRS. CARTER'S SECRET

Mrs. Carter was waiting in the library when we returned.

She stood beside the fireplace with Emma and Mara behind her, one hand resting on the back of a chair.

She did not look surprised to see Luca angry.

That worried me more than surprise would have.

Daniel closed the library doors.

Two guards remained outside.

Luca placed his phone on the table and played Vanessa's voicemail.

Mrs. Carter listened without moving.

When it ended, she said, "Vanessa always enjoyed drama."

"Did you open the service gate?" Luca asked.

"No."

"Your code did."

"Then someone copied it."

Daniel said, "The keypad logs show a manual entry, not a cloned badge."

Mrs. Carter looked at him.

"Are you accusing me?"

"I'm stating a fact."

Emma stepped closer to me.

I knew Mrs. Carter as the woman who remembered every employee birthday, who kept extra cash in the kitchen safe for staff emergencies, who once drove me home through a snowstorm because the buses stopped running.

But I had learned in the last twenty-four hours that affection and truth were not the same thing.

Luca's voice softened.

"Margaret."

It was the first time I had heard him use her first name.

"If there is something you have not told me, now is the time."

Mrs. Carter closed her eyes.

When she opened them, she looked older.

"Your mother asked me to keep one secret from you."

Luca went still.

"My mother has been dead twelve years."

"Yes."

"What secret?"

Mrs. Carter walked to a cabinet near the bookshelves and removed a small wooden box.

She set it on the table.

"Your father and Enzo were not equal partners in the family companies. Your father controlled seventy percent. Enzo controlled ten. The remaining twenty belonged to a trust created for Michael."

Michael's name changed the room.

"I know the ownership structure," Luca said.

"You know the structure after your father changed it."

Luca frowned.

Mrs. Carter opened the box.

Inside were old letters tied with a faded ribbon and a sealed legal envelope.

"Your mother discovered that Enzo had been borrowing against family assets without your father's knowledge. She wanted him removed. Your father refused. He believed blood mattered more than money."

"And?"

"Before she died, she made me promise that if Enzo ever tried to take control from you or Michael, I would give you this."

She handed Luca the envelope.

The paper inside was yellowed at the edges.

A notarized amendment.

Luca read it.

Then read it again.

"This makes the succession instrument useless," he said.

Daniel leaned closer.

"How?"

"Any transfer of executive control triggered by incapacity requires consent from Michael's trust. If Michael does not consent, the board cannot install Enzo."

Mrs. Carter nodded.

"Your mother anticipated a family coup long before any of you were willing to imagine one."

Luca looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me after Michael disappeared?"

Pain crossed her face.

"Because Anna came to me first."

I stopped breathing.

"Anna?"

Mrs. Carter looked at me.

"She came through the service entrance the night after Michael vanished. She knew someone was watching the front gates. I hid her here for six hours."

Luca stared at her.

"In my house?"

"In the old linen room behind the east staircase."

"You hid my brother's wife from me in my own home?"

"She begged me not to tell you. She believed one of your closest people was involved. At the time, Daniel had already altered the logs. Nathan controlled your legal information. Vanessa slept under this roof. Enzo visited whenever he pleased. Anna did not know who was safe."

Daniel looked down.

Mrs. Carter continued.

"She gave me copies of several records and told me to protect the amendment. Then she left."

Luca's anger fought with understanding.

"And tonight? The gate?"

Mrs. Carter's mouth tightened.

"Vanessa stole my code weeks ago."

"How do you know?"

"Because I watched her use it once."

The room erupted.

Daniel swore.

Luca slammed his palm on the table.

"And you said nothing?"

Mrs. Carter did not flinch.

"I changed the code the next morning."

"The same code was used tonight."

"Then the system was reset to an older configuration."

Daniel's face changed.

He pulled out his phone.

"Only three people can do that remotely. Me, the security vendor, and-"

He stopped.

Luca finished.

"Enzo."

Daniel nodded.

The code had not proven Mrs. Carter betrayed us.

It proved Enzo still had deeper access than anyone realized.

Mara exhaled shakily.

"So Vanessa was telling the truth? She ran from Enzo?"

"Maybe," Luca said. "Or she wants us to think she did."

Emma spoke for the first time.

"Where would she go?"

Everyone looked at my sister.

She shrugged.

"If she really is afraid, she won't go somewhere Enzo knows. If she's lying, she'll go somewhere he expects."

Luca studied her.

"You should be a detective, not a nurse."

"Detectives don't get to wear comfortable shoes."

A surprised laugh escaped me.

It lasted one second.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face darkened.

"We found Vanessa's car."

"Where?"

"Parking garage near the river. Empty."

"Cameras?"

"Working on it."

Mrs. Carter looked at Luca.

"Anna used a church near there when she needed a place to meet Mara. St. Vincent's. Basement entrance on the alley side."

Mara nodded quickly.

"She did. Once."

Luca took his coat.

I stood too.

"No," he said.

"We've done this already."

"This is different."

"Because you think Mrs. Carter betrayed you?"

His eyes flashed.

"Because someone is using you as part of a public scandal, your sister has been threatened, and Vanessa specifically called you."

"Which means I might know something you don't."

"Which means you are bait."

The word hurt because it was true.

I looked at my bandaged hand.

"I was bait the moment she burned me. Keeping me upstairs doesn't change that."

Luca said nothing.

Then Mrs. Carter surprised us both.

"Take her."

He looked at her.

"Margaret."

"Lily is not fragile, Luca. Stop protecting her in ways that remove her choices."

Heat rose in my face.

He looked from Mrs. Carter to me.

"Fine."

"That sounded painful."

"It was."

We reached St. Vincent's after midnight.

The church was locked, but the basement door stood open an inch.

Daniel went first.

The room inside smelled of dust, old coffee, and candle wax.

Rows of folding chairs faced a small meeting table.

Someone had been there recently.

Two coffee cups.

A woman's scarf.

A dropped lipstick.

Vanessa's.

I recognized it because I had picked up that exact gold tube from her bedroom floor a dozen times.

Daniel pointed toward a side room.

The door was closed.

Luca opened it.

Anna Moretti stood inside.

Alive.

She was thinner than in the video, her hair cut short, her face exhausted.

She held a fireplace poker in both hands.

When she saw Luca, she lowered it.

Then she started crying.

He crossed the room and held her.

Neither of them spoke.

I turned away.

A minute later, Anna pulled back.

"Michael?"

"Alive. Safe."

Her knees buckled.

Luca caught her.

"He's safe," he repeated.

Anna covered her face.

For six months she had been running because she believed her husband might already be dead.

Now one sentence gave him back to her.

It should have been the end of something.

Instead, Anna looked over Luca's shoulder at me.

"You're Lily."

I blinked.

"How do you know?"

"Vanessa told me."

"Where is she?"

Anna's expression changed.

"Gone."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What happened?"

"She came here because she wanted protection. She said Enzo was going to kill her after the board vote. She brought a folder with account passwords and recordings."

Luca looked around.

"Where's the folder?"

Anna went pale.

"Vanessa had it."

"And where did she go?"

"She got a call. She listened for maybe ten seconds. Then she looked at me and said, 'I'm sorry.' She walked out the back door."

Luca's voice became low.

"Who called?"

Anna shook her head.

"I don't know."

My phone rang.

Everyone looked at me.

Unknown number.

Again.

Luca nodded once.

I answered on speaker.

Enzo's voice filled the church basement.

"Good evening, Lily."

My blood went cold.

"Where is Vanessa?"

A soft chuckle.

"Straight to business. I understand why my nephew likes you."

Luca took one step toward the phone.

Enzo continued.

"Tell Luca the board meeting is tomorrow at noon. Tell him to bring the original amendment his mother left with Margaret."

Mrs. Carter's secret.

He knew.

Luca's face hardened.

"And if I don't?" he said.

Enzo laughed.

"Then Vanessa disappears with the only records tying Nathan to Bellweather, and your brother becomes the unstable addict we always said he was."

"You don't have Michael."

"No."

A pause.

"But I have something else you care about."

The line went quiet.

Then Emma's voice came through.

Terrified.

"Lily?"

The world stopped.

I could not breathe.

My sister was supposed to be at the mansion.

Under guard.

Safe.

Enzo returned to the phone.

"Noon, Luca. Bring the amendment. Come without federal agents. And Lily comes too."

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Luca looked at Daniel.

"You said she was safe."

Daniel was already calling the mansion.

His face turned white.

"The library guard is down. Alive, but unconscious. Emma's gone."

My injured hand began shaking.

Luca reached for me.

I stepped back.

"Don't tell me she's safe."

He stopped.

I looked at him.

"Don't promise me anything you don't know."

His face changed.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

He took a breath.

"I won't promise."

May you like

His voice became hard.

"I'll bring her home."
