Chapter 6 - BUILDING C

Building C stood behind two abandoned freight warehouses and a chain-link fence topped with loops of rusted wire.
From the street, it looked empty.
That was the problem.
Nothing around it looked empty by accident.
The windows had been painted black from the inside. The loading dock was clean despite the cracked pavement around it. A silver medical transport van sat near a side entrance with no company logo on the doors.
Daniel handed Luca a small earpiece.
"Two men at the front. One on the west exit. Heat signature shows at least four people inside, maybe six."
Luca fitted the earpiece.
"Police?"
"Federal contact is twenty minutes out. Local units are compromised until we know who Enzo owns."
I sat in the rear of the SUV listening.
Luca had told me to remain at the mansion.
I had told him Emma would remain there with Mrs. Carter and Mara, but I was coming because the message had been sent to my phone, the cake had been placed in my hands, and I was done learning important facts after everybody else had already decided what I was allowed to know.
He had stared at me for five seconds.
Then he had opened the car door.
"You stay in the vehicle."
"Fine."
"That wasn't a negotiation."
"Neither was my answer."
Now he looked at me from outside the SUV.
"Lock the doors when we move."
"I know how locks work."
A faint, exhausted smile touched his mouth.
"Lily."
"Yes?"
"If anything changes, you drive away."
"With what keys?"
He paused.
Daniel silently handed me the spare fob.
I almost smiled.
Luca did not.
"Drive away," he repeated.
Then he and Daniel crossed the alley with four security men.
The next eight minutes were the longest of my life.
I heard almost nothing through the closed windows.
A metal door opened.
Someone shouted.
A vehicle alarm began screaming somewhere behind the building.
Then silence.
My hand hurt beneath the bandage. I realized I had been gripping the seatbelt with it and forced myself to let go.
The side door of Building C opened.
Daniel appeared first.
He waved once.
Then two men carried out a stretcher.
Luca walked beside it.
I knew who was on it before I saw his face.
Michael Moretti looked thinner than the photographs in the mansion. His beard had grown unevenly. His skin was gray with exhaustion. But his eyes were open.
Alive.
Luca leaned close while the medical team transferred the stretcher into another vehicle.
Michael caught his sleeve.
"Anna?"
"We're looking for her."
"No." Michael struggled to sit. "She's here. Chicago. She came back for me."
Luca pressed a hand gently against his shoulder.
"Rest."
"Listen to me. Enzo knows she came back."
"We know about Enzo."
Michael's eyes sharpened.
"Then you know about the succession papers?"
"Vanessa mentioned them."
Michael gave a bitter laugh that became a cough.
"Vanessa doesn't know what they really do."
Luca glanced at Daniel.
"What do they do?"
Michael looked around as though the freight yard itself might be listening.
"They don't give Enzo control if you die. They give him control if the board removes you for incapacity, criminal exposure, or scandal. Nathan wrote the language so broad they could trigger it almost any way they wanted."
"And you signed?"
Michael's face tightened.
"They put papers in front of me after days without sleep. I signed a witness page. I didn't know what it was attached to."
Luca's expression did not change, but I saw the pain in it.
"It's not your fault."
Michael looked away.
"Don't say that until you know everything."
A federal medical team arrived five minutes later.
The agents with them took control of Building C. Nathan Cole was not inside.
Neither was Enzo.
One private nurse surrendered. Two guards were detained. A third man had escaped through a drainage access at the back.
The room where Michael had been held contained medication logs, restraints, and a stack of unsigned documents.
No Anna.
But Daniel found something in a desk drawer.
A photograph.
Anna standing outside the Moretti mansion two nights earlier.
Taken from across the street.
On the back, in black marker, were the words:
SHE CAME HOME.
Michael saw it and went pale.
"He's going to use her."
"For what?" Luca asked.
Michael looked at his brother.
"To make me sign the clean version."
"He doesn't have you anymore."
"Then he'll use someone else."
His eyes moved toward me.
I felt the meaning before he said it.
"Enzo knows Lily matters now."
Luca's head turned sharply.
"She doesn't. Not to the documents."
Michael's tired eyes held his.
"That's not what I meant."
The words landed between us.
I looked away first.
Luca ordered the federal team to move Michael to a secure hospital under another name.
He stayed until the ambulance left.
Only then did he return to the SUV.
He opened the door and climbed in beside me.
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
"You found him," I said.
"Yes."
"He's alive."
"Yes."
His voice broke slightly on the second word.
He turned toward the window.
I pretended not to notice.
Sometimes kindness meant looking directly at pain.
Sometimes it meant allowing a person to have it privately.
I chose the second.
Daniel got into the front seat.
"We have a problem."
Luca closed his eyes for one second.
"Of course we do."
"Enzo's attorney filed an emergency petition forty minutes ago."
"For what?"
Daniel turned around.
"To suspend you from control of Moretti Holdings pending an internal investigation."
Luca's eyes opened.
"On what grounds?"
Daniel looked at me before answering.
That was enough to make my stomach drop.
"Abuse of corporate assets. Improper payments. Threatening a fiancee. And coercing a household employee into a personal relationship in exchange for financial protection."
I stared at him.
"What?"
Daniel held up his phone.
The screen showed a news alert.
LUCA MORETTI ACCUSED OF MISUSING FAMILY EMPIRE TO SILENCE FIANCEE.
Below the headline was a photograph of Luca and me leaving the bakery.
In the picture, his hand was at my back as he guided me past the broken glass.
The caption called me "an unidentified female employee believed to be living at the Moretti residence."
My skin went cold.
Luca read the article without expression.
Then another alert appeared.
A video had been uploaded to three gossip sites.
Vanessa, crying into a camera.
"I tried to leave him," she said in the video. "But Luca controls everything. My phone. My money. The staff. He became obsessed with one of the maids, and when I confronted him, he threatened me."
I felt sick.
The video had been recorded months ago.
She had prepared it before the engagement party.
Before my hand was burned.
Before the USB was found.
Luca watched until the end.
Then he handed the phone back to Daniel.
"She knew this was coming."
"Looks that way."
"Get me the timestamp metadata."
"Already doing it."
I looked at Luca.
"What happens if the board believes her?"
He met my eyes.
"Enzo gets what he wanted."
"Control?"
"Temporary control becomes permanent once the money and records disappear."
Daniel's phone rang again.
He answered, listened, then swore.
"What?" Luca asked.
Daniel turned pale.
"The mansion security team says Vanessa is gone."
"Gone how?"
"Someone opened the staff service gate from inside."
My heart started pounding.
"Emma."
Daniel held up a hand.
"She's safe. Mrs. Carter has her in the library. Mara too."
Luca's face became stone.
"Who opened the gate?"
Daniel looked at the message on his phone.
"That's the problem. The access code belonged to Mrs. Carter."
I stared at him.
"She would never help Vanessa."
"I know."
The SUV turned toward the mansion.
Then my phone buzzed.
One new voicemail.
Unknown number.
I played it on speaker.
Vanessa's voice filled the car.
Calm now.
Almost cheerful.
"Lily, tell Luca I didn't run from him. I ran from Enzo. And tell him if he wants Anna alive, he should stop looking at the people who left the house. He needs to start looking at the person who never did."
The message ended.
Daniel looked at Luca.
I looked at him too.
One person in the mansion had been there through every meeting, every meal, every locked door, every family secret.
Mrs. Carter.

Before we left the freight yard, a federal agent brought Luca a sealed evidence bag containing a hospital wristband. The printed name read M. ROMANO, but beneath the barcode someone had written a second set of initials by hand: E.M. Daniel's face darkened. "Enzo Moretti." The agent explained that the band had been found in a locked cabinet with duplicate patient files. It did not prove Enzo had been treated there. It proved he had access to the same private system used to hide Michael.
Michael, already inside the ambulance, looked through the open doors. "He came twice," he said. "Never to check on me. To remind me he could reach anyone I loved before Luca could." Luca's gaze moved to me. I understood why. Emma was waiting at the mansion. The threat had just become personal again. When the ambulance pulled away, Luca did not watch his brother disappear. He watched the road behind us, as if he finally understood that rescue did not end the danger. It only changed who the enemy would reach for next.
