Adrian wanted Vanessa to be solely responsible.
The evidence would not permit that comfort.
He had traveled for eighty-seven days during the previous six months.
Some trips were necessary.
Others allowed him to avoid conflict at home.
Whenever the children became quiet on video calls, Vanessa said they were tired.
When Emma asked to speak alone, Vanessa claimed secrecy reinforced manipulation.
When Noah begged Adrian to come home, Adrian promised “soon” and returned to a board meeting.
When Lily stopped appearing on calls, he accepted the explanation that she was sleeping.
Adrian had not known what happened in the corridor.
He had repeatedly accepted arrangements that prevented him from knowing.
At the hospital examination, Emma asked him one question.
“Why didn’t you see us?”
Adrian did not answer with work, grief, or manipulation.
“I stopped looking carefully.”
