Clara Asks About the Clock

Chapter 18 - Clara Asks About the Clock
When Clara was seven, she saw the antique hall clock inside a family archive.
“Was this in our old house?”
Sophia said yes.
“Why is it here?”
“It recorded something important.”
“Was it bad?”
Sophia gave an age-appropriate answer.
“Your father tried to make me sign something by frightening me. The clock helped prove what happened.”
Clara considered this.
“Grandpa saved you?”
“Many people helped me. I also asked for help.”
Sophia refused the heroic version because she wanted her daughter to understand that requesting help was an action, not a failure.
Clara touched the glass case.
“Does the clock still listen?”
“No.”

“Good.”
They left it silent.
