The Slap in the White Kitchen

Chapter 01 - The Slap in the White Kitchen

The slap echoed through the Bennett family kitchen before Emily understood that Victoria had actually struck her.

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

Emily stood beside the marble island with one hand pressed to her burning cheek and the other curved protectively beneath her eight-month belly. The kitchen was bright, immaculate, and expensive enough to appear in a magazine. Sunlight poured through the tall windows. White cabinets gleamed. A bowl of untouched lemons sat between them like a staged decoration.

Victoria Bennett lowered her hand slowly.

She wore a cream silk blouse and a dark brown skirt, the uniform of a woman who believed anger became respectable when properly tailored.

“You will not take this family from me,” she said.

Emily tasted blood where her teeth had caught the inside of her cheek.

“I asked you one question.”

“You accused me of theft.”

“I asked why my medical records were in your desk.”

Victoria’s expression tightened.

Twenty minutes earlier, Emily had entered the study searching for the blue envelope the late Richard Bennett had reportedly left for her. She had found no envelope. Instead, she discovered copies of her prenatal tests, a draft petition declaring her mentally unstable, and a laboratory report claiming the baby was not her husband’s.

The report was dated six weeks before the test had supposedly occurred.

Emily had brought it into the kitchen and asked for an explanation.

Victoria gave her one with an open hand.

“You trapped Noah,” Victoria said. “You arrived with a sad childhood, a pretty face, and just enough innocence to make a man feel heroic.”

“I met your son before I knew his last name.”

“And now you are carrying a child that will control everything.”

Emily’s breath shortened. The baby shifted firmly inside her.

“What does my child control?”

Victoria moved closer.

“The question is who the father is.”

The doorway behind her darkened.

Noah Bennett stood there in a fitted olive T-shirt and jeans, having returned from the airport two hours early. His suitcase remained in the hallway. His face went still as he saw Emily holding her cheek.

He looked at his mother.

“What happened?”

Victoria answered first. “She became hysterical.”

Emily did not speak.

Noah crossed the kitchen and gently turned her face toward the light. A red handprint was forming along her cheekbone. His jaw tightened.

“Did you hit her?”

Victoria lifted her chin. “She threatened me.”

“I asked if you hit my wife.”

“She needed to be stopped.”

Noah stepped between them.

Emily had seen him angry before, but never this quiet.

He looked at the documents on the island, then at his mother’s raised hand.

“You don’t get to touch her.”

Victoria laughed once. “This is my house.”

“Not anymore.”

Emily swayed.

Noah caught her before her knees gave way. When she whispered that the baby was moving strangely, he lifted her into his arms.

Victoria followed them toward the doorway.

“If you leave with her, don’t come back.”

Noah did not turn around.

May you like

“That was already the plan.”

He carried Emily out of the white kitchen while Victoria stood beneath the hidden camera she had forgotten Richard installed twelve years earlier.
