The Real Father in the Room

Chapter 13 - The Real Father in the Room
Calvin disappeared before investigators could arrest him.
His passport remained at home, but a company plane left a private airport using a false flight plan. The pilot later claimed Calvin forced him to land in upstate New York.
Police found the plane empty.
Noah knew where Calvin would go.
Richard owned an unfinished hunting lodge near Lake George. It had no official address, limited cell service, and a basement vault built for company archives.
Noah gave investigators the coordinates.
Calvin was arrested there with three hard drives, cash, and the original blue envelope.
Inside the envelope were Richard’s letters to Emily, a certified copy of Claire’s birth record, and a photograph of Claire as a child sitting on Richard’s shoulders.
There was also a document Calvin had not expected investigators to understand.
It was a confession.
Richard wrote that he learned Noah was Calvin’s biological son but chose not to expose the affair because Noah was innocent. He planned to remove Calvin from the company after completing the succession trust.
Calvin discovered the plan.
That was why Richard’s final medical transfer occurred so suddenly.
Records showed Calvin ordered a medication change that left Richard heavily sedated during his last week. The dosage was not fatal, but it prevented Richard from meeting Emily or finalizing Calvin’s removal.
Calvin had not killed Richard.
He had stolen his final days.
At the arraignment, Calvin saw Noah sitting behind the prosecutor.
He smiled.
“Son.”
Noah did not react.
Calvin’s attorney requested a private conversation. Noah agreed only with Sarah and a detective present.
Calvin leaned across the table.
“Richard made you weak.”
“Richard made me responsible.”
“I gave you the instincts that built that company.”
“You gave me genes. He gave me standards.”
Calvin’s expression hardened.
He claimed Project Harbor was created to preserve Noah’s future. If Emily inherited control, Calvin intended to transfer the assets to Noah.
Noah asked why the beneficiary documents named Calvin alone.
Calvin had no answer.
“You didn’t do any of this for me,” Noah said. “You used the idea of me to justify what you wanted.”
Calvin laughed softly.
“You think Emily will keep you once she owns everything?”
Noah remembered the hotel, the hospital, and Emily making jokes while frightened.
“If she leaves me, it will be her choice. Love that depends on ownership is just a contract with better lighting.”

Sarah raised an eyebrow, impressed.
Calvin looked at Emily’s husband and finally understood that the obedient nephew was gone.
