Victoria’s Last Performance

Chapter 16 - Victoria’s Last Performance

Victoria requested one final meeting with Emily.

Sarah advised against it.

Emily agreed anyway, with cameras, attorneys, and a detective present.

Victoria entered the interview room without jewelry. She looked tired but composed.

“I have information that can reduce Calvin’s sentence,” she said.

“You mean increase his conviction.”

A faint smile appeared. “Richard liked that about you.”

“Which part?”

“You correct the premise before answering the question.”

Victoria offered financial records connecting Calvin to other acts of sabotage. In return, she wanted Emily to ask prosecutors for leniency.

“Why should I?” Emily asked.

“Because I am Noah’s mother.”

“That is a reason for Noah to have feelings. It is not a legal defense.”

Victoria’s control slipped.

“I gave him a life.”

“Richard gave him a father.”

The words landed harder than Emily intended.

Victoria looked toward the mirrored wall.

She admitted that jealousy shaped almost every decision she made. Richard loved the memory of Mary Hart. Claire’s existence proved his past could enter their home. Emily’s arrival made that past young, intelligent, and impossible to dismiss.

“When Noah fell in love with you,” Victoria said, “it felt as if Richard had chosen Mary’s family again.”

Emily understood the emotion without excusing the behavior.

“You turned everyone into contestants in a competition Richard was not running.”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“He was going to leave the company to you.”

“He was going to place it in stewardship.”

“You don’t understand what it is to spend your life building a name and learn the name never belonged to you.”

Emily leaned forward.

“You built your identity around controlling what other people could know. That is not the same as building the company.”

Victoria’s final piece of evidence was a handwritten ledger hidden in her attorney’s storage. It documented payments for the clinic fraud, Claire’s surveillance, and Project Harbor.

She surrendered it.

Not from remorse alone.

Calvin had blamed everything on her.

Fear had changed direction.

Before Emily left, Victoria asked about the baby.

“She is healthy.”

“A girl?”

“Yes.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Will you name her Claire?”

Emily stood.

“That is between Noah and me.”

The boundary was small and absolute.

At the door, Victoria said, “I did love my son.”

Emily looked back.

“I believe you. But love without respect becomes possession.”

Victoria had no response.

For once, silence was not a weapon she controlled.
