The Son Who Wasn’t Richard’s

Chapter 12 - The Son Who Wasn’t Richard’s

Noah met Victoria at the county detention center after she was charged with assault, attempted medical fraud, and conspiracy.

She appeared smaller without the Bennett kitchen behind her.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Victoria said, “Calvin is your father.”

“I know.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When it would not destroy you.”

Noah studied her.

“The truth didn’t destroy me. The use you made of it nearly did.”

Victoria’s eyes filled, but he no longer trusted tears simply because they were expensive to produce.

She told him the affair began when Richard traveled constantly. Calvin made her feel seen. When she became pregnant, Calvin wanted her to leave Richard.

She refused.

Richard’s growing company offered security. Calvin offered excitement but no name worth protecting.

“So Richard raised me because you lied.”

“At first.”

“And after he knew?”

Victoria looked away.

“He chose to keep you.”

That answer hurt her more than any accusation.

Richard had shown the unconditional love she claimed to possess.

Noah asked about Claire.

Victoria denied ordering the crash.

“I threatened her,” she admitted. “I wanted her gone. Calvin said he would frighten her. I didn’t know he would touch the car.”

“You knew afterward.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“I had you to protect.”

“No. You had yourself to protect.”

Victoria reached toward the glass separating them.

“Noah, I am still your mother.”

He did not deny it.

“That is why this hurts.”

She offered to testify against Calvin if Noah promised to support a reduced sentence and visit her.

Noah refused to trade affection for evidence.

“Tell the truth because it is the truth.”

“You sound like Richard.”

For the first time, the comparison felt like inheritance.

Before leaving, Noah asked one final question.

“Why did you encourage me to marry Emily after learning who she was?”

Victoria answered honestly.

“If she married you, I thought her shares would remain inside the family.”

“You believed I could control her.”

“I believed she loved you.”

“She does.”

Victoria’s voice became bitter.

“Then why are you the one losing everything?”

Noah stood.

“I’m losing a title, an office, and a lie about my blood. I’m keeping my wife, my child, and the father who chose me even after he knew.”

He turned toward the door.

Victoria called his name.

He looked back once.

“I will decide what relationship we have after you stop using the word family to mean obedience.”

Then he left her alone with the first boundary she could not purchase.
