The Glass at the Altar

Chapter 01 - The Glass at the Altar

The wedding stopped before the vows.

Under a white-flower arch at a sunlit California estate, Emma Lane stood in a gray service shirt and black apron while the bride gripped her arm hard enough to make the tray shake. Around them, guests in dark suits and pastel gowns stared from rows of gold chairs. No one asked why Emma was crying. They only saw a waitress near a bride whose perfect afternoon had suddenly become imperfect.

Camila Reyes held a crystal glass of orange juice in her other hand. Her tiara caught the late-afternoon light, but anger had sharpened her face.

“You tried to ruin my wedding,” she said.

Emma shook her head. “No, ma’am. Please don’t drink that.”

Adrian Cole, the groom, stepped closer in his black tuxedo. He looked concerned in exactly the way a camera expected a concerned groom to look.

“Camila,” he said softly, “security can handle this.”

The sentence frightened Emma more than the accusation.

Three minutes earlier, she had seen Adrian near the refreshment table. His back had been turned toward the guests. His right hand had lifted a small white container over Camila’s glass. A clear liquid had disappeared into the orange drink.

Emma had raised her phone because no one would believe a temporary server over the future son-in-law of the Reyes family.

Then Adrian noticed her.

Emma knocked the glass from the tray before Camila could drink, but another server caught it. To everyone else, it looked like sabotage. Adrian called her unstable. Camila seized her arm. The guests watched the poor girl destroy a rich woman’s wedding.

Emma pulled free and held up her phone.

“I recorded him.”

The screen showed no readable words, only the image of a hand pouring clear liquid into the same glass beneath the same flower arch.

Camila’s anger faded.

Adrian’s face did not.

That was how Emma knew the video had captured the truth.

The officiant lowered his folder. A violinist stopped mid-note. Roberto Reyes, Camila’s father, moved from behind the arch but did not yet speak. He watched Adrian watch the phone, and the old man’s expression changed. Emma had expected disbelief from everyone. What frightened her was that Roberto seemed to believe her before Camila did.

Camila loosened her grip on Emma’s arm. “Show me again,” she said. Emma replayed the clip. On the screen, the clear liquid disappeared into the orange drink. In real life, the same glass trembled in Camila’s hand. She placed it on a stone table as if it had suddenly become too heavy to hold.
