The Ceremony Stops

Chapter 07 - The Ceremony Stops

Roberto canceled the wedding with six words.

“There will be no ceremony today.”

The guests inhaled as one body.

Adrian’s mother protested. The wedding planner stared at hundreds of white roses as if calculating the price of truth. A violinist lowered her bow. Somewhere behind the arch, a fountain continued running, indifferent to scandal.

Adrian moved toward Camila.

“We can handle this privately.”

She stepped away.

That small distance ended the engagement before any formal announcement could.

“You put something in my drink,” she said.

“I was helping you.”

“Without telling me.”

“You’re letting a waitress destroy us.”

Emma flinched.

Camila did not.

“A waitress warned me,” she replied. “You lied.”

Police sirens were still distant when the estate’s security footage arrived. The image was grainier than Emma’s phone, but it showed Adrian alone at the refreshment table. It showed him remove the white container. It showed him pour. It showed him pocket the object and scan the garden.

The angle did not show his face clearly.

It did not need to.

His posture, ring, suit, and sequence matched Emma’s video.

Adrian’s confidence cracked.

He accused Roberto of setting him up. He accused Camila of wanting an excuse to abandon him. He accused Emma of blackmail.

Each accusation widened the distance between him and everyone else.

Roberto’s security team did not touch Adrian until he tried to reach for Emma’s phone.

Then two guards stepped between them.

Adrian stopped.

The gates closed.

Camila removed her engagement ring and placed it beside the untouched orange drink.

The diamond caught sunlight.

For eighteen months, it had represented certainty.

Now it looked like evidence.

Camila’s bridesmaids stood near the staircase of the terrace, bouquets lowered. One began crying. Another removed her heels as if the gesture could make the event less formal, less impossible. Nobody approached Camila until she reached for Emma’s hand.

The contact surprised them both.

Minutes earlier, Camila had held that wrist in anger. Now she used it to steady herself. Emma did not pull away. She understood that being saved did not make humiliation disappear; sometimes rescue and shame arrived in the same moment and had to be carried together.
