The Hand on the Screen

Chapter 05 - The Hand on the Screen

Emma held the phone with both hands because one was not steady enough.

The clip lasted seven seconds.

It showed the refreshment table. The orange drink. Adrian’s right hand. A small white container. A clear stream. The silver ring engraved with the shape of a falcon.

No readable timestamp appeared. No dramatic music. No explanation.

Only action.

Roberto Reyes stepped out from behind the officiant. At sixty-two, he carried the quiet authority of a man accustomed to rooms obeying before he spoke.

“Play it again.”

Adrian moved toward Emma. “That phone was recording illegally.”

Roberto lifted one hand.

Adrian stopped.

Emma replayed the clip. The guests remained silent. Camila watched without blinking. Her grip tightened around the untouched glass until her knuckles paled.

Adrian tried a softer lie.

“It was a calming supplement. Camila has been anxious.”

Camila turned to him. “I don’t take supplements.”

“You said you were nervous.”

“I said I couldn’t sleep.”

Roberto looked at the glass. “Put it down.”

Camila placed it carefully on a stone table. The drink remained upright, bright, ordinary, and suddenly frightening.

Adrian’s mother began crying from the front row. His best man stared at the ground. The officiant closed the ceremony folder.

Emma expected someone to take the phone from her.

Instead, Roberto asked her name.

“Emma Lane.”

“Did you see anything else, Emma?”

She looked at Adrian.

He no longer looked charming.

He looked trapped.

“He told me I didn’t see anything.”

That sentence changed the room more than the video.

A harmless act needs no threat.

Roberto faced the head of security.

“Lock the gates. No one leaves until the police arrive.”

The wedding guests finally began to understand they were no longer attending a ceremony.

They were witnesses.

The physician asked Camila whether she had swallowed any of the drink. She shook her head. Emma had interrupted before the rim touched her mouth. Roberto exhaled once, a controlled sound that revealed how close panic stood beneath his authority.

Adrian looked toward the estate gate. Security noticed. One guard shifted into his path without touching him. The floral arch still framed Adrian like a groom, but every detail of the ceremony had changed meaning. The aisle was no longer leading him toward a bride. It was narrowing around a suspect.
