The Document After the Vows

Chapter 09 - The Document After the Vows

The document had arrived two weeks before the wedding.

Adrian described it as routine estate planning. If Camila became temporarily unavailable during travel, he would be authorized to vote her shares in Reyes Hospitality. The authority would last thirty days and could be revoked at any time.

Camila’s attorney advised against it.

Adrian called that advice insulting.

“We’re about to be married,” he said. “If you don’t trust me for thirty days, what are we doing?”

Camila agreed to sign after the wedding reception.

The document waited in a leather folder inside Roberto’s study.

When investigators examined it, they found changes.

The thirty-day limit had been removed from one page. A clause granting Adrian authority during any “medical impairment” had been inserted. The signature line remained blank, but the notary section had already been prepared by a professional connected to Adrian’s investment firm.

Roberto read the pages twice.

“I approved the original draft,” he said.

Camila looked sick. “He changed it after.”

The detective asked who had access to the study.

Family. Senior staff. Adrian. Camila’s cousin and chief financial officer, Lauren Vega.

At the mention of Lauren’s name, Camila remembered something.

Lauren had delivered the folder personally.

She had also suggested serving orange juice before the ceremony because Camila looked pale.

The investigation widened.

Adrian was no longer the only person whose future depended on Camila losing control of her shares.

Emma listened from the hallway and wondered how many people could stand beside a bride, smile for photographs, and wait for her to become helpless.

Her mother’s lesson returned.

Invisible people see the most.

The problem was convincing powerful people to look.

Camila remembered Adrian insisting the signing happen after the ceremony rather than before. He said he wanted no business to contaminate their wedding morning. The explanation had sounded tender. In reality, the vows would have given him the appearance of a devoted husband helping an impaired wife.

The leather folder contained a pen engraved with Camila’s initials. She stared at it for a long time. Adrian had transformed intimacy into stage dressing. Even the gift had been selected to make the forged scene photograph well.
