The Trust Leaves the Mercers

Chapter 11 - The Trust Leaves the Mercers

The court confirmed that Amelia’s protection clause had activated.

Control of the Mercer Education Trust transferred permanently to an independent board.

Members included students, teachers, cafeteria workers, former foster youth, school nurses, parent advocates, and financial auditors.

No Mercer received a permanent seat.

Daniel retained personal financial security and could apply for an elected role after a cooling-off period.

Caleb and Lily received education, healthcare, housing, and legal-record protections.

They did not inherit authority over thousands of students.

At sixteen, each could apply for a youth board seat like any other student.

Several Mercer relatives challenged the transfer.

They called it theft from the family.

Caleb’s advocate answered:

“The family lost automatic control because family-funded institutions erased a child for financial gain.”

The board reopened every Briarwood contract.

Programs that served children continued under new management.

Empty facilities were closed.

Duplicate payments were recovered.

The trust became slower.

Meetings included students who disagreed with executives.

Some donors left because the organization no longer offered polished stories without uncomfortable testimony.

The work became less elegant.

It became harder to steal from.
