The Chamber Under Mercer House

Chapter 02 - The Chamber Under Mercer House

Daniel widened the opening while Lily remained several feet away with the housekeeper, Rosa Martinez.

The metal hatch opened into a ventilated service chamber below the hallway. A narrow ladder led to an old maintenance corridor.

Caleb stood at the bottom wearing gray medical clothes and holding a small brass whistle.

He was pale and frightened but conscious.

Daniel descended only after asking permission.

“Can I come down?”

Caleb nodded.

Daniel wrapped him in the coat he had been wearing and guided him toward the ladder. Paramedics arrived within minutes because the chamber’s archive system had automatically sent an alert to an independent safety server.

Victoria told them Caleb was a confused patient named Colin Reed.

Daniel ignored her.

At the hospital, DNA confirmed what his heart already knew.

Caleb Mercer was alive.

Independent doctors found no serious injury. He was dehydrated, underweight, and affected by long-term sedative medication, but he was medically stable.

The hidden chamber contained a bed, bottled water, packaged food, a medical tablet, and a biometric scanner.

It was not an abandoned tunnel.

Someone had prepared it for temporary confinement.

Detective Lena Ortiz secured the estate.

The tablet displayed an unsigned document titled:

EMERGENCY CAPACITY TRANSFER — CALEB MERCER.

If Caleb’s thumbprint had been recorded before midnight, Victoria would have become permanent trustee of his inherited shares.

His thirteenth birthday was four days away.

The Mercer Education Trust contained schools, scholarships, and child-data systems worth more than three billion dollars.

Caleb and Lily were equal beneficiaries.

With Caleb legally dead, Lily controlled the future transfer.

With Lily still a minor, Victoria served as temporary family trustee.

Caleb’s return should have ended that authority.

Instead, the document was designed to declare him mentally incapable and leave Victoria in control.

Daniel asked how Caleb reached the chamber.

The boy closed his eyes.

“Aunt Victoria said she was bringing me home.”
