The Wall Behind the Bed

Chapter 06 - The Wall Behind the Bed
Investigators returned to the chamber with structural engineers.
Behind the bed was an old brick wall that did not appear on the estate plans.
Lily recognized a row of painted stars along the lower edge.
Amelia had painted the same pattern inside the children’s nursery.
The third star turned when pressed.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside were paper ledgers, encrypted drives, school contracts, and a recorder wrapped in blue cloth.
Amelia’s voice began the first file.
“If my children are hearing this, someone has confused guardianship with ownership.”
She had discovered that several Mercer-funded schools were billing the trust under duplicate student identities.
Some students appeared in two states at once.
Others were listed as receiving therapy, meals, and housing they never received.
Briarwood Youth Recovery Center held the largest contracts.
Victoria approved those payments as operations director.
Victor designed the legal structure.
Dr. Mercer produced behavioral diagnoses whenever families questioned the records.
Amelia planned to remove them all from the trust.
She died in a car accident six weeks later.
The official investigation found no criminal cause.
The archive did not prove anyone killed her.
It did prove the fraud continued after her death.
Amelia’s final recording addressed Daniel.
“You read people generously and documents quickly. That can become dangerous when the generous people write the documents.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
She had warned him while alive.
He remembered dismissing her concerns as exhaustion from board work.
Victoria had supported him.
“She needs rest,” his sister said at the time.
Years later, the same language appeared in Caleb’s medical file.
Confused.
Fixated.
Unable to understand consequences.
The archive activated the second condition.
