Mason’s Letter

Chapter 18 - Mason’s Letter
Five years into his sentence, Mason wrote Evelyn through a court-approved program.
The first letter explained his childhood, Victor’s influence, and the pressure to preserve Crowe Family Services.
The program did not forward it.
The second named his choices.
He admitted dating Evelyn to gain access to Haven.
He admitted encouraging distance from Robert.
He admitted using affection to learn which memories made Evelyn doubt herself.
He wrote:
I believed the ballroom would finish what isolation started. If everyone watched you look confused, you would eventually believe their version too.
Evelyn read the sentence with her counselor.
It confirmed something she already understood.
Public humiliation was not the beginning.
It was meant to become the final proof of a private story.
Mason asked for no reply.
Evelyn gave none.
Later, he supplied codes that recovered additional trust money.
The restitution helped people.
It did not create a bridge back to her.
When outsiders asked whether she forgave him, Evelyn stopped answering.
