Robert Bennett’s Confession

Chapter 08 - Robert Bennett’s Confession

News programs called Robert the father who locked a ballroom to save his daughters.

He refused the title.

At a public hearing, he admitted that his decisions had helped create the system.

After Nora vanished, Robert wanted technology and certainty.

Victor offered both.

Crowe Family Services promised identity tracking, private investigators, and national foster databases.

Robert approved contracts without independent review because he believed urgency justified speed.

When Catherine questioned the invoices, Robert called her grief-stricken.

Their marriage ended two years before her death.

He later told himself he respected her work by funding Haven.

In reality, he funded the contractors she feared.

He also failed Evelyn.

When Mason began isolating her, Robert criticized the marriage aggressively. Evelyn defended her husband and reduced contact.

Robert chose pride over patience.

“I searched for Nora as a commissioner,” he said. “I did not listen to Catherine as a partner or Evelyn as an adult.”

The confession did not erase twenty-two years.

It changed what happened next.

Robert resigned from every automatic position inside Haven.

He transferred Sentinel’s relevant security records to independent investigators.

He created a restitution fund using profits earned from Crowe contracts.

Nora accepted none of his money personally.

She asked that it support adults repairing altered identities.

Evelyn agreed to meet him weekly.

Nora did not.

Robert accepted the difference.
