The Lantern Archive

Chapter 05 - The Lantern Archive

The silver key opened a hidden cabinet inside the Bellamy’s old lighting room.

Catherine had named it the Lantern Archive because the chandeliers’ maintenance cables ran behind the walls.

Inside were paper ledgers, sealed drives, foster-placement files, and recordings from Haven board meetings.

Catherine’s voice opened the first file.

“If my daughters hear this, I am sorry the truth took longer to reach you than the people who stole it.”

She explained that Crowe Family Services duplicated children’s identities across counties.

One real child could generate payments for several imaginary placements.

Children who disappeared from one file reappeared in another under different names.

The system targeted those with incomplete records, deceased parents, or relatives who lacked money for legal challenges.

Nora’s identity became the model.

The Crowes declared her dead publicly while keeping the name active financially.

Victor created trust accounts.

Dr. Mercer wrote behavioral reports whenever children or parents questioned records.

Judges approved emergency transfers.

Mason joined the scheme later.

He courted Evelyn because marriage offered access to Haven’s protected shares.

The archive contained messages between Mason and Victor from before the wedding.

SHE TRUSTS LOVE MORE THAN ACCOUNTING WHEN SHE IS TIRED.

KEEP THE NORA FILE SEALED UNTIL AFTER THE ANNIVERSARY VOTE.

Evelyn read each message without speaking.

Her marriage had contained real dinners, trips, jokes, and tenderness.

The records did not prove every warm moment false.

They proved affection had been used as access.

Catherine’s final document established a protection clause.

If anyone attempted to seize Haven through a false incapacity claim, the trust would transfer automatically to a board of former foster youth, workers, educators, and independent auditors.

The clause required proof from two archives.

Lantern was one.

The second was called Harbor.

Mason had spent years searching for it.
